I thoroughly enjoyed this book! The story was interesting, well written and well researched. It kept me guessing whether or not Lark would marry Emerson, and for a good bit of the book I thought she might marry Edwinn Calvert a man she met in Annapolis.

I learned a lot about American history after the revolution but before the treaty was officially signed from this book. While I am a history buff this was one time period I have never been very familiar with. For instance I knew New York City and Philadelphia served as the capital of the United States before Washington D.C. was built but I had no idea Annapolis did as well for a short time. While I have heard of the city I know it only as the capital of Maryland and the home of the United States Naval Academy.

I also never thought about how Tories (people who remained loyal to England during the war) might have been treated during and after the war, which is another area White addresses within the book.

Forgiveness is a major theme in this book. Emerson has hurt Lark deeply and he comes to ask her forgiveness which she is very reluctant to give.

On the whole this is a page turning book which gives an interesting perspective on an often overlooked city in an often overlooked short period of American History. I give it four and a half out of five stars.

If there is a book you would like me to review please write it in the Comments.

Soli Deo Gloria!
