Our story opens in the summer of 1969. The Apollo 11 lifts of from Earth and lands on the moon. Protests and peace marches are taking place allover America against whatever you can think of, but mostly against the Vietnam War. Squads of American soldiers are in the woods of Vietnam trying to find Vietcong soldiers. You have a man on point to look for booby traps. Today's point is Dalton Joiner (Austin Stovall). You see Joiner has a good luck charm back home by the name of Jane (Aimee Teegarden).
Our squad runs into a fire fight and are able to take most of the Cong soldiers out. Our boys take some hits but come out of it pretty much okay, considering. Back at the base they get fixed up for R and R . They are headed to Hong Kong, but you see there is a problem. Joiner received a Dear John letter from his girl. He knows he has a week off. So he thinks he's going to try to make it back to the States to ask Jane to marry him. His friend Mickey Wright (Liam Hemsworth) follows suit and they head back home to take care of business. As long as they can get back to Nam before the week is out nobody would really be the wiser.
They make it back home and Jane has now changed her name to Juniper and she is living the life of a Hippie. Peace, love, and tie dyed shirts, needless to say Joiner is floored. Mickey eyes a girl by the name Candace (Teresa Palmer). Life has changed and Jane has moved on. She tried to tell Joiner in the letter but he had to find out for himself.
This was a turning point summer for the United States. The war had taken it's toll on the American psyche. Kids were dying and kids were fighting against everything. Director Danny Mooney has put together a beautiful love story and has shown just how everybody was tore about all that was going on. If you remember these days it will feel like a trip down memory lane, and if you are younger you will see what your parents had to deal with as they were becoming young adults. Either way I hope you really enjoy this movie.
