Louisiana Loom Works is an unassuming shop on Chartres Street in New Orleans' historic French Quarter. Step inside and you will be wowed by a burst of colorful rag rugs that are virtually everywhere. You also can't help but notice that they are weaving some of the most beautiful rag rugs you will ever see right before your eyes.
Owned by Walt & Ronda Rose, the looms at Louisiana Loom Works are usually filled with projects when you visit the store and brightly colored rag rugs adorn the walls and the floor. If, by chance, you don't find something in your size or color, they will create a custom rug for you.
I've visited the store numerous times but was always overwhelmed at the color choices and sizes; never quite knowing what color to go with or what room needed a magnificent rug like this the most. However, I moved recently and this time, I had a clear vision of what I wanted so after a visit to New Orleans' French Quarter, I contacted the store to place an order.
I asked for a six-foot runner and gave them a list of my preferred colors. I even visited their Facebook page and scrolled through their photos until I found a rug that used a similar color palette. I referenced that photo in my correspondence to them. With minimal input from me, they started on the project. I didn't see any "in progress" photos along the way; I trusted them implicitly.
The rug wasn't inexpensive but it was worth every penny. The final rug was 2.5-feet wide and 6.5-feet long. Total cost was $446 including shipping and it took approximately eight weeks. The rug can be machine washed on the gentle cycle in cool water and hung on a line to dry. This rug is guaranteed to become a family keepsake for years and years to come.
