These days when you mention the Hulk everyone talks about the Avengers film, but before the CGI laced green behemoth laid the smack down on an alien invasion, Lou Ferrigno brought him to life in 5 seasons of the Incredible Hulk TV series. Liberator follows a disgraced ex-super hero looking to set the record straight pens a tell all book that draws the attention of his former military chief who does not plan on letting him blow the whistle on the cover up so easily. Once the President of the United States declares him Public Enemy Number One he will have to take up the mantle of the Liberator again to clear his name and face off against his former teammates. For those that do not know about this project, it is a short film that was funded through Kickstarter originally meant to be a pitch style pilot, but has sense become a convention and film festival phenomenon. The film itself introduces the characters and gets the ball rolling setting up for what is sure to be some fun superhero action. While it’s clear it’s a low budget, it is shot so well that it doesn’t look like it. There is a lot of story packed into this short film as well as some decent action to keep viewers entertained. Ferrigno is stepping out of the shadows here and taking on the role delivering some of his best acting of his career getting a chance to showcase a wider range of emotions. The rest of the cast only get just enough to set things up, but still manage to bring some energy to the roles and elevating the film higher than you could have imagined. One of the biggest reasons this film or series needs to continue is to see martial arts icon Don “The Dragon” Wilson as Sidewinder get his chance to face off against Ferrigno’s Liberator in what is sure to be an epic fight like fans have never seen.

There is a great super hero movie here with a fun cast that is just itching to unleash it’s fury on the world, but until that day you can not only check out this film, but also a 2 issue comic series to continue the adventures. In addition to the short, this DVD release sports numerous special features including interviews from all the cast, behind the scenes featurettes, outtakes, con appearances, and more taking the Liberator experience beyond just the film.
