It's not a secret that TV shows are becoming like movies you watch one hour at a time. Usually the quality series are relegated to cable (like Breaking Bad or Homeland) or become limited "event series" (like Under The Dome or the upcoming Dracula).
Fox is looking to change this with Sleepy Hollow.
Based on Washington Irving's classic tale, Sleepy Hollow starts off in the Revolutionary War, where Ichabod Crane (Tom Mison), a British spy for General George Washington, battles a mysterious masked Red Coat horseman, decapitating the man before dying himself. 250 years later, Crane rises from a shallow grave in cave in modern day New York, finding himself to be a man out of his element.
However, the madness just begins when Sheriff Abbie Mills (Nicole Beharie) starts investigating a string of murders where the victims are left decapitated, and sees a headless assailant ride off on a pale white horse. When his story corroborates with what she's seen, Mills reluctantly teams up with Crane to investigate this bizarre Headless Horseman, and how it may be connected by something bigger.
Created by uber-producers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (Star Trek, Now You See Me), as well as Len Wiseman (who directed the pilot episode, and is the mastermind behind Underworld) and Phillip Iscove, Sleepy Hollow (which also borrows themes from Irving's other tale "Rip Van Winkle") is a modern gothic thriller that is certainly the most impressive show on Fox's new lineup. The Sherlock-meets-X-Files feel is enough to please any geek on the planet, while the amazing cinematography, amazing performances from Mison and Beharie, and a writing staff hellbent on sending chills down your spine, this is the first example of how the 2013-14 TV season is bound to be promising.
FINAL VERDICT: With amazing set performances and writing, not to mention intense action sequences and cinematography, Sleepy Hollow promises to bring Hollywood blockbuster quality to basic cable every week. Anyone looking to check out the next big thriller should not miss this series.
Miss the pilot episode? No worry! Fox will be re-airing the pilot this Friday, Sept 20.
