Loot Crate is a monthly service in which you receive geek-friendly merchandise at a discount, grouped around a particular theme. This month’s theme was villains, which is pretty broad – villains are in all kinds of media so the possibilities for what might be inside were endless. This t-shirt is the highlight of the crate and it combines many fans’ favorite things: the Joker and Loki.
Now this a bit strange given that Loki really is something of a hilarious trickster god in Nordic myth, not the brooding egomaniac from the comics and Marvel “Avengers” series. In my first Dungeons & Dragons campaign, Loki’s son Lowkey (who was much less violent than his father, thus the name) was a frequent thorn in everyone’s side and a master of chaos. So combining the Joker with Loki makes a lot of sense to me.
The picture on the shirt is Loki in his iconic brooding pose, which doesn’t really suit the Joker but that’s okay. In case you don’t get the Joki – excuse me, joke – his name is spelled out behind him. It seems a bit on the nose to me -- I can’t imagine anyone assuming this guy’s name “Loker.” Part of the fun of wearing these shirts at cons is having nerds in the know figure out what it all means, and spelling it robs the shirt of its mystery.
The other thing is that it’s essentially still a clown sprawled on a throne. If you’re not fond of clowns (or the Joker), you’re not going to love this shirt. My son wasn’t and gave it a two out of five stars.
