Beauty mavens have Birchbox. Fashionistas have Stitch Fix. Pop Culture aficionados have Loot Crate. Launched in July 2012, Loot Crate delivers monthly boxes stuffed full o’ geek goodness right to your home or fortress of solitude.
These mystery boxes ain’t filled with floor sweepings; they have some seriously collectible items. The August Loot Crate got “Looters” dancing when they found an exclusive Funko POP! Groot bobble-head in their deliveries.
Each month, the Loot Crate has a different theme. August’s was “Heroes,” so Groot (of “Guardians of the Galaxy” fame) shared space with a kidrobot-designed Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle, and other hero-inspired swag. The Deadpool “Chimichang’Os” magnet, designed by Zack Finfrock, was possibly the coolest item in the bunch.
For one’s own heroic duties, Shoe Lightning Bolts by Shwings were included. With a moment’s notice, you can transform into Flash, Mercury, or Hermes with these super-cute fabric lightning bolts that lace right into one’s shoes.
Rounding out the tangibles of the August “Heroes” crate, Looters got their own “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle” Mask Glasses and an Epic-Scents air freshener featuring Sega’s Sonic, Mega Man, or Proto.
Each month’s Crate also features exclusive digital loot. Sticking with the Heroes theme, unlock codes for “Doctor Who: Legacy” fittingly made it into the August Crate. Like the TARDIS, the Loot Crate does seem to be larger on the inside.
Loot Crate has fostered a burgeoning online community of “Looters” all across social media platforms. Looters can tag photos of themselves and their booty with the hashtag #LOOTCRATE and appear in the monthly Loot Crate print (yes, print!) magazine.
Including shipping and handling, a 1-month Loot Crate subscription plan will set one back just about $20 and can be canceled at any time. Prices drop per month with extended 3-month and 6-month subscriptions. For more details and an archive of past crates, visit Loot Crate.
