Feb 25, 2011 - Baz Luhrmann is the Australian film director, screenwriter, and producer of what is commonly known as The Red Curtain Trilogy, composed by the movies Strictly Ballroom, Romeo and Juliet, and Moulin Rouge! There is no story line connection between the three films, as it is usually understood a trilogy to be, but it is called so due to the theater motif that Luhrmann used within them.
Show at Barre, in Vermont Ave in Los Angeles, is currently hosting For The Record: Baz Luhrmann. Selections out of the three movies are performed in a relaxed environment perfect for those who enjoy musical theater best when it doesn’t have the theater-ish constrictions.
In a low lit room where you are encouraged to drink and eat, where the band plays just a few feet away from you, and where the singers/actors are actually hoping you’ll take a picture and share it with your friends, you are able to enjoy some of the best songs you’ve ever heard by performers who are anything but new to theater – the voices belong to people you may have already seen perform before – in Wicked, Rent, In The Heights, and more. They will sing to your left, to your right, in front of you and behind you. They will get on the stage, on a small platform half way down the seating area, and quite often on top of the bar. They are beautiful people with gorgeous voices doing what they love best in an intimate setting where your best pair of jeans will do.
Here are the logistics: it is a small place so you must buy your $20 cover charge tickets ahead of time. The tickets do not guarantee your table – they go in a first-come first-serve basis. A two drink minimum is expected and an 18% tip will be added to your bill. In other words, for two people this is a $100 night. But it is a good one! There are not very many places like Show at Barre in LA.
Show at Barre is located at 1714 North Vermont Ave, in Los Angeles. Tickets can be purchased HERE. Check out the attached video to see what you can look forward to.
