Whether it’s their dramatic Book of Shadows collections or their sleek, sophisticated Naked line, Urban Decay is well known for their eye shadow palettes. That’s why it’s no surprise that they’ve come out with a pair of palettes to celebrate the highly anticipated Disney film, Oz the Great and Powerful, starring James Franco, Michelle Williams, and Mila Kunis. If you’re a fan of the good witch from the original Wizard of Oz, Urban Decay’s Glinda Palette ($49) is made for you. Full of soft shades of purple, pink, and peach – and plenty of Urban Decay’s trademark glitter – the collection is ideal for delivering a pretty, ethereal look that’ll get you noticed even in Oz.

The limited edition Urban Decay Glinda Palette contains six full size (1.5 grams) shadows, though two are “duo-shades,” which means you get eight shadow colors in the collection. They include Tornado, a shimmery dark purple; Aura, a duo of iridescent white with blue shift and iridescent white with red shift; Magic, a pink purple with gold shimmer; Illusion, a light peach with satin finish; Oz, a duo of gold with gold glitter and silver with silver glitter; and South, a warm shimmery gray-taupe with silver micro-glitter. The palette also comes with a travel size 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Rock Star, a dark eggplant, and a full size Super-Saturated High Gloss Lip Color in Glinda, a light sheer pinky beige.
Packaging
Unlike some of Urban Decay’s older palettes, the Glinda Collection comes in a durable hinged tin with Oz the Great and Powerful-inspired artwork that celebrates the good witch character with colors like pink, gold, and peach. It also features Urban Decay’s Build Your Own Palette format, which means you can easily remove the individual shadows and replace them with other shades that you’ve purchased from the brand. The top portion of the palette features a large mirror, which makes it ideal for travel, and there’s a slot in the center for the 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil.
Availability
The Urban Decay Glinda Palette is available on the Urban Decay website , Sephora’s website, and Ulta’s website. Starting January 31st, it is available in Sephora and Ulta stores, as well as the Urban Decay counter at Macy’s Roosevelt Field.
Verdict
While the Glinda Palette may not provide as many shadow shades as Urban Decay’s previous Book of Shadows offerings or even their Naked Palettes, it’s still a remarkable value. The eye shadows in the palette are all full size, and since Urban Decay’s shadows retail for $18, you’re getting $108 of product for less than half price – and that’s not even counting the travel size 24/7 liner and the Super Saturated lip pencil.
Urban Decay’s shadow formula is usually outstanding, and the Glinda shadows are no exception – they’re extremely pigmented, smooth, and easy to blend. While the shades are softer than the shadows in the Theodora Palette, which features dark browns and other neutral shades, you can actually achieve a variety of looks with the Glinda Palette. Magic and Illusion are ideal for the lid when you want a romantic, feminine look, but Tornado and South are deep enough to create a sexy smoky eye for nights out. The Aura duo offers two beautiful highlight shades that are super brightening on the eyes.
The one shade that’s an issue in the palette is Oz – the gold portion has big, chunky glitter that creates plenty of messy fallout beneath the eyes. That’s another thing to keep in mind about the palette –- there are no matte shades, so if you have mature skin, you may find that all the shimmer and glitter in the shadows accentuates fine lines and wrinkles.
The 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Rockstar is a lovely dark eggplant shade that’s a softer alternative to black, and the Glinda Super Saturated High Gloss Lip Color is a lovely soft pink shade that works well for everyday wear. It’s got plenty of shine, feels smooth and creamy on the lips, and has good staying power to boot.
All in all, the Glinda Palette is a winner – if you’re a fan of Urban Decay, the Wizard of Oz, or are just in the market for shimmery shadows in feminine colors, you definitely can’t go wrong.
