I am always looking for a good thriller or horror novel so I was immediately intrigued when I saw “Look Behind You” by Sibel Hodge. I grabbed a review copy as quickly as I could and dove right in to the story.
When Chloe Benson wakes up tied to a chair in an underground cavern, she has no idea how she came to be there. The only thing she knows is that she must escape. She soon finds herself in a hospital bed trying to explain what happened to her but no one will believe her. She was found alongside a nearly deserted road in the woods and everyone believes that she did this to herself in a fit of mania brought on by a reaction to sleeping pills and anti-depressants. Only Chloe knows for sure that her life is in danger.
When she is finally released from the hospital, Chloe finds herself trying to piece her life back together after the events that led to her problems. She had a miscarriage shortly after her husband’s birthday party that led to her first violent reaction to medication. From that point on, it appeared that she had gone temporarily insane and must be protected from harming herself. Everyone from the police to her employer and even her controlling husband seemed convinced that the only danger to Chloe came from herself. Only Chloe knows that someone is out to kill her and she must piece together fragments of evidence and her own scattered memories to identify and stop the killer before it is too late.
“Look Behind You” is a tightly written novel of suspense and horror. The reader is brought along on a fragmented tale of one woman trying to piece together her life in the face of disbelief by all of those around her and her own suspect memories. The terror of the tale builds slowly as Hodge guides Chloe and the reader through the scattered clues toward the final climax of the story. Just when things seem to be poised to come together and form a reliable conclusion that will allow Chloe to understand what is happening, it is all turned on end to form something new and even darker than before. This is a tale of psychological horror but also one of a physical terror that is ever present and lurking behind every corner.
I had never read any of Hodge’s works before but I am now a fan of hers after reading this novel and cannot wait for another chance to read one of her works. Hodge brings a strong sense of timing to this novel that allows it to move along at a fast but manageable pace that kept me at the edge of my seat throughout the novel. There are no words spared in the weaving of this tale as Hodge keeps the story tightly knit and the suspense ratcheted to a feverish pitch on every page. I found myself rushing through the story to see what would happen next and I could not really ask for more in a thriller novel. “Look Behind You” is a very strong thriller with definite horror overtones to please fans of both genres and is a great way to spend a couple suspenseful hours.
I would like to thank NetGalley and Sibel Hodge for this review copy. “Look Behind You” is available now.
