A true story based on a book by Marcus Luttrell about a failed seal mission in the mountains of Afghanistan. The mission turns bad for the soldiers and shows the struggle that these men had to endure while trying to survive the wrath of the Taliban.

A seal team of four men are assigned to a mission, called “Operation Red Wing”. Their job is to find a secure location, locate Senior Taliban Commander, Ahmad Shah (Yousuf Azami), and wait for orders. When things go wrong and their mission is compromised they must find a way to abort and report back to the rescue team.

Now, Lieutenant Michael Murphy (Taylor Kitsch) must guide his crew of soldiers, Marcus Luttrell (Mark Wahlberg), Danny Dietz (Emile Hirsch), and Matt 'Axe' Axelson (Ben Foster), on an impossible journey to save their lives. They quickly find themselves defending each other and looking for an escape from the Taliban through the mountains of Afghanistan and must find a way to reach safety.

When the team finally reaches the extract team led by Lieutenant Commander Erik Kristensen (Eric Bana), things get real sticky as they try to reach them. This is where these men have to scramble for safety or die on the mountain at the hands of the Taliban soldiers.

Director and Writer, Peter Berg does a good job converting the information from Marcus Luttrell and Patrick Robinson’s book. He seems to keep some details that remain true to the story. The action scenes are extreme and show what these characters had to do to stay alive. The set location does help to keep with the terrain these characters experienced, and adds some beautification to the film. I did like that Berg included actual footage of the Navy Seals training process and what they experienced.

A well written story that tells the tale and includes the hardship these men had to endure to try to survive. It also includes many details that make it hard to believe that anyone could survive at all. But, the film is entertaining and includes some intense action scenes that helped keep me intrigued throughout. I did enjoy some of the later scenes of the film that include an interesting tradition, called “Pashtunwali” that the people of Afghanistan practice.

Final Grade: I give this a C+, for its good storyline and well developed action scenes.
