February is national teen dating violence awareness and prevention month so if you and your teen have not seen the Teen Healthy Relationships website (http://www.nomeansknow.com), you should. The website is sponsored by the Idaho Coalition Against Sexual and Domestic Violence. The site accomplishes the most important aspect of attempting to educate teens, it is appealing. The pictures are of Idaho kids, the quotes are from teens in various Idaho schools, and the site provides dating information to teens without lecturing. The site consists of the following pages:
- The home page announces the web site's purpose and lists current contests open to Idaho teens as well as winners from past competitions.
- A facts page which tells teens what they need to know about dating abuse and assures them to 'know it can be you'. Parents will also find the statistics on the page sobering.
- The warning signs page contains a quiz. If a teen answers 'yes' to any of the questions, they are in an abusive relationship. This could be a very powerful tool if you are worried your teen may be in a romantic relationship that is not healthy.
- The get help page offers sound advice for those in an abusive relationship, or things to do and say for those who have a friend who is in an unhealthy relationship.
- A dating page focuses on the positives of romantic relationships. This list informs teens of what good relationships should maintain, including respect, self-confidence and compromise.
- The get involved page informs interested teens how to become a part of the Idaho Teen Dating and Violence Awareness and Prevention project.
- A stuff page is a place where free Healthy Relationships posters and book marks can be requested. It is unclear, however, if these materials have to be requested by school personnel.
- The links page is the last page for the site. This page provides links and phone numbers for national organizations out there to help teens with dating abuse issues.
The Teen Healthy Relationships site is a great resource for teens who are trying to navigate a romantic relationship, and parents can have confidence that teens are receiving solid relationship information from the site.
