What happens when cuisine, culture and cardio collide? You get a five-star review for Sacramento's very Local Roots Food Tours -- Origins of Sacramento Food and History Walking Tour! 3.5 hours, five local restaurants, some history, a smidge of culture, coupled with a leisurely 2.5-mile urban walk -- an outstanding way to spend a morning and part of an afternoon in Midtown and East Sacramento. Where your comfy shoes and arrive hungry.
Tour guide, Nate, did an outstanding job herding the group of 16 to and fro from Cafe Bernardo, Centro Cocina Mexicana, La Bombe Ice Cream Parlor, Formoli's Bistro, and Coffee Works. Wonderfully informative and delicious! A little background on historic points of interest in between scarfing down Bernardo's incredible French toast, carnitas at Centro, ice cream at La Bombe, soup and bruschetta at Formoli's, and ending with a jolt of caffeine at Coffee Works. You won't go hungry on this new spin on a local grub crawl. The price, $58 per person, is worth every bite. Getting up-close and personal with local chefs and restaurant staff is the icing on the proverbial cake. Seeing and eating how behind the scenes they are supporting the farm-to-fork/locavore movement makes you feel good about packing on few extra calories. Wait...remember, I did mention the 2.5-mile walk! You're working for every forkful. Skip the gym and take tour.
The brainchild of Lisa Armstrong, this is only one of several tours offered by Local Roots Food Tours. Her motto, "Savor, learn, explore, connect." You'll do all of this and more. If you have special needs -- vegetarian, food allergies -- they can accommodate you. Vegan and gluten-free not at this time.
