Live Review: the beat goes on for Liam Gallagher and Beady Eye in Seattle

If you're a fan of Oasis, then Wednesday November 30, 2011, at Seattle's Showbox at the Market was a rare treat. Noel and Liam Gallagher may have now parted ways, but that doesn't mean that they've stopped the music. Noel Gallagher is back in the charts right now with his High Flying Birds, while Liam is on tour in North America with Beady Eye.

Those of you who've already checked out Beady Eye's debut album, Different Gear, Still Speeding, will know that it's very much business as usual for the ex-Oasis singer. In fact, Beady Eye consists of four-fifths of the Oasis line-up, and their "Oasis-minus-Noel" tag seems well deserved. While there's a new focus on Fifties-style rock'n'roll alongside the Sixties and Seventies homages, Beady Eye doesn't exactly rewrite the Oasis songbook.

As for their live show, it still delivers the kind of swaggering hook-heavy pop-rock that you'd expect, even if the band are forced to draw from a noticeably thinner catalog. The evening's biggest hits are provided by some of the songs that Andy Bell brought to the table - 'Four Letter Word', Millionaire' and 'Kill For A Dream' - and fans of Oasis (and Bell's former bands, Ride and Hurricane #1) will be hoping to see more of his influence in the future.

The band as a whole look pretty tight, though, and as Liam Gallagher sweats his way through an energetic 90 minutes it's clear that they won't be slowing down any time soon. Suddenly the album title feels more like a manifesto than a hollow boast. Beady Eye - a different gear, but still Liam.
