Queens of the Stone Age played an eccentric show Thursday night at the Fillmore in Detroit. These guys are touring in support of their newly released sixth studio album entitled ....Like Clockwork. This new album debuted at #1 on the US Billboard 200, and is the band's first number 1 album. Not only is their new album getting rave reviews, it features some top guest musicians such as Dave Grohl (Nirvana), Trent Reznor(NIN), Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees), Jake Shears (Scissor Sisters), Nick Oliveri (Kyuss), Alex Turner (Arctic Monkeys), Jon Theodore (The Mars Volta), and the legendary Elton John. With a new killer number 1 album and a legion of fans, it was no wonder the show was sold out.
The show openers were a New York Indie Rock band called Guards. Their dream pop sound, plastic flamingos and cool stage vibe entertained all while the venue quickly filled to capacity. Guards played a quick 30 minute set of songs of their newly released first studio album In Guards We Trust, released on Black Bell Records.
Queens of the Stone Age hit the stage a few minutes late of 9:30. They immediately dove into the new album playing the song "Keep Your Eyes Peeled". They played 9 songs off the new album and 11 other songs from their previous catalog of albums, including their biggest hits "No One Knows" and "Little Sister".
Their incredible 2 hour set had fans on their feet the entire time. This band has a dedicated following of fans, and it seemed everyone knew all the lyrics to the songs, even the new ones. There was constantly long lines at the band's merch table, probably because this band has a bunch of killer swag for sale.
Singer Josh Homme's voice sounded so perfect, a fan asked me if he was lip singing. I laughed at the thought Mr Homme pretending to sing on stage, and assured him he was not. Homme is just that good, and the entire band is super tight. The gigantic video wall was mesmerizing at times, forever changing and evolving into some trippy cool sights. Along with an intense light show and of course the fantastic music of QOTSA, it was a magical, incredible concert.
