Last Thursday singer/songwriter Danny Malone brought an all-star band with him to The Mohawk. Traditionally, Malone appears with only an acoustic guitar and a microphone to perform. Thursday the performance included veteran musicians, guitarist, Scrappy Jud Newcomb (Toni Price, Ian McLagan) , drummer, Dony Wynn (Robert Palmer, Brooks & Dunn) and bassist, David Beck. Malone stepped up to the mic and began playing with his band in tow like a modern, indie-folk version of Dylan and The Band.
Yeah. He's good. The show was impressive. Not only was Malone's band sounding great on The Mohawk's indoor stage tucked behind the bar, but the singer was in the zone after completing a brief tour of the U.S. Fans had crowded up to the edge of the stage, drawn in my Malone's magnetic charisma.
The set included favorites, "Wait on Me" and "Baby Bleu" which the audience sang along to. Malone has just returned from Denmark where he participated in a government-sponsored co-writing program. The experience seems to have benefited him. There was an added confidence to his singing that was not as evident when we saw him at SXSW.
Set list:
- My Affection
- Sailing
- into the darkness
- Fly in the Window
- Spiderlegs
- Wait on Me
- Naive Melody
- Secrets
Malone is scheduled to perform next at The Courtyard Series hosted by Launch 787 at Cypress Vanguard on August 11th.
German singer, Peter Piek opened the show including a Daniel Johnston cover in his set list, acknowledging his trip to Austin. He was a skilled multi-instrumentalist, switching easily from guitar to keyboard to acoustic. Fans were appreciative of the singer's range.
