Little Britain Restaurant

If you crave such British favorites like fresh and tasty fish and chips, bangers and mash, Cornish pasty, sausage rolls, or chicken curry you have no further to go than the Little Britain Restaurant at 488 N. Allen St., Pasadena, CA 91106. As you enter this neat little restaurant located on the corner of Allen Avenue and Villa Street, you'll be surrounded by British memorabilia. The walls are hung with sepia toned prints of the English countryside and city scenes, with traditional Beatles music playing to put you "in the mood".

The owners, Peter and Elizabeth Holder, are old hands when it comes to serving traditional British food, as the previous owners of Brits Restaurant for eight years, which was located on Colorado Boulevard in Pasadena. Their current location, christened Little Britain Restaurant, has been open since August 2, 2011.

To start you off, they serve a variety of appetizers, including: sausage rolls (English sausage wrapped in puffy pastry and served with gravy for dipping), curried vegetable samosas, banger bites (bangers are plump English sausages) served in bite-size pieces with gravy dipping sauce, Cajun fish spread (blackened Icelandic cod in a cream and goat cheese spread and served with crusty bread), white bean and artichoke dip (served with crostini), or a side order of their famous chips (big ranch-style fries topped with either brown gravy or curry sauce).

For lunch, enjoy their Caprese chicken (grilled and marinated chicken breast served with organic baby greens and Caprese salsa), a delicious vegetable shepherds pie (a combination of seasonal vegetables cooked in a tomato sauce and topped with mashed potatoes), pan roasted haddock served with seasonal vegetables au jus, or the tasty vegetable sauté (seasonal vegetables sautéed in a white wine and roasted garlic sauce and served on a bed of basmati rice).

Their sandwiches include the curried chicken salad, sardines on toast, BLT, Monterey chicken, egg salad with basil, a cheese and mango chutney sandwich served on a French roll, their 8 oz. Angus beef burger (with caramelized onions, bacon, mushrooms, cheese or avocado toppings), a traditional grilled cheese sandwich or the homey beans on toast sandwich.

Their generously proportioned dinner entrées include the traditional favorites: fish and chips (served with peas), their delicious bangers and mash with peas (English sausages served over mashed potatoes and topped with caramelized onions and a rich brown gravy), a Cornish pasty (ground Angus beef with vegetables and potatoes baked in a puffy pastry and served with mashed potatoes, baked beans and gravy), sausage rolls baked in puffy pastry and served with mashed potatoes and baked beans and gravy, chicken curry served over basmati rice with mango chutney, and a traditional baked shepherds pie (ground chuck steak, vegetables and onions in a rich brown sauce, topped with mashed potatoes). A refreshing house salad consisting of diced zucchini, tomatoes, cucumbers, and red onions served over a bedding of fresh mixed greens can be added to any entrée for $1.95.

They have an extensive offering of vegetarian dishes, including their original salads: the Balmoral salad (a blend of organic baby greens, Stilton cheese, Bermuda onion, tomatoes, and caramelized walnuts with a raspberry vinaigrette), Caesar salad, spinach salad, Caprese salad (fresh mozzarella cheese, tomatoes and basil served with a balsamic vinaigrette), their original lettuce cups salad (young butter lettuce leaves topped with your choice of egg salad or curried chicken salad). Don’t forget to sample the curried vegetable samosas, white bean and artichoke dip, vegetable shepherd’s pie, vegetable sauté, egg salad sandwich, cheese and chutney sandwich, grilled cheese sandwich, or beans on toast.

Their dessert menu changes on a daily basis, so please ask your server for the dessert of the day.
