In 2002 the famed 1975 musical production came to the big screen and not only featured an all-star cast including Renee Zellweger, Richard Gere, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Dominic West, John C. Riley, Taye Diggs, Lucy Liu, and Queen Latifah, but it also swept award ceremonies winning in just about every in all the major catergories. Now Lionsgate is bringing the film back to Blu-ray in an all-new Diamond Edition.
If you have never seen the film it follows murderesses Velma Kelly and Roxie Hart who find themselves on death row together and fight for the fame that will keep them from the gallows in 1920s Chicago. This film established its own reputation by not only all of the awards it racked up upon its initial release but the sheer fact that it is getting this type of release at all. Obviously it is geared towards a specific audience and are likely the only ones that are going to be excited to revisit this film anyway. If you are not a fan of musicals, then you are likely to passed on this film, but now is your chance to check it out in all it-s beautiful hi-def glory. Stepping outside the musical aspect the story works really well and could easily stand alone, but the music aspect is used to enhance the nature to the story itself. Everyone delivers a great performance, most notably Queen Latifah in her mainstream breakout performance. Visually this film was already stunning, but the edition of the hi-def transfer just adds to the glitz and glamor of it all.
In addition to this award winning film, this Diamond Edition release sports numerous special features including commentaries, a deleted musical number, From Stage to Screen: The History of Chicago featurette, and the NEW Chicago in the Spotlight retrospective documentary that is exclusive to this Blu-ray. Step back onto the stage and grab your copy of Chicago Diamond Edition when it hits stores on February 11th.
