These days there’s a continual game of leapfrog between smartphone cameras and point-and-shoot cameras. The thing is we tend to carry our smartphone wherever we are. Therefore when paired with the right accessories your pricey smartphone camera will definitely become your day-to-day camera. For example the Lifeproof Nüüd for the iPhone 5S/5C provides the ultimate in phone protection and allow you to take your iPhone underwater, on the ski slopes and on dusty dirt bike paths to capture images you never had a way to take previously even with your expensive DSLR let alone your point-and-shoot camera.
One of the biggest selling points for buying the Lifeproof Nüüd case is the fully ruggedized case which is perfect for the active and extreme user. The Lifeproof Nüüd is touted to protect your smartphone with the Four Proofs: 1) It is waterproof (up to 6.6 feet), 2) Dirt Proof sealed from dust and dirt, 3) Snow Proof completely sealed to withstand the freezing snow and ice, and 4) Shockproof, capable of being dropped from up to 6.6 feet (2m).
Right out of the box you are encouraged to water test your device, which is really reassuring. Before you actually plunge your iPhone into the water, Lifeproof recommends that users water test their case before installing an actual iPhone. When we put ours to the test we submerged it (empty) into a pitcher of water for a half hour. After that period of time we inspected it to see if any water seeped inside. The case is so water tight it is actually difficult to re-open.
To open it we had to go around the perimeter of the case to unsnap the two pieces, all the while hoping not crack anything during the process. The seal ensures the ultimate water resistance. However adding one more notch for unsnapping the case would be helpful.
The rugged and tight seal begs the question of how this case can be waterproof as well as have screenless (meaning there IS no screen protector) technology. The Lifeproof Nüüd case has a waterproof seal that exposes only the screen. All ports and buttons are covered with a thin layer of plastic, allowing even the touch ID on the new iPhone 5s to be used. The touch ID works virtually every time because of the position that the finger sits on the scanner due to the raised case, which is a very nice serendipitous perk.
The mute button can be a little confusing at first because the design was made so that the switch operates backwards. So switching up will cause the phone to mute and vice versa. It takes a little bit of getting used especially because the iPhone will vibrate when put on silent so you’ll be able to know when it is put in either mode.
A thin membrane, neither of which hinders the lens or flash, protects the camera and flash. The speakers also work perfectly. The ports for headphones and charger are also completely protected. The headphone jack has a screw on top, and is connected with a piece of plastic to the phone so you do not misplace it like you might have when the top was unattached. To keep consistent with the waterproofing, Lifeproof provides a special cable that screws in which provide protection while listening to audio.
Besides that, the case is impressively thin. Lifeproof is about military standards. Lifeproof cases are built to withstand all sorts of daily tortures such as drops up to 6 feet high. And as aforementioned, the case is waterproof, dirt proof, snow proof and shock proof. When we performed our own drop tests, it was detected that the case did get scruffs much easier than a rubber case. They can be unsightly, but exchanging a few scuffs for a completely protected iPhone is exactly what the case is supposed to do.
Ultimately the Lifeproof Nüüd is a great case that is worth every penny. When you invest in a nice phone, investing in a drop proof, waterproof, snow proof, and dirt proof case is going to save you a trip or two to the Apple store.
