As I continue my venture into vegan eating, I’ve found that it’s really not that difficult.
It’s just a matter of planning and reading.
Planning where to eat and knowing what the menu offers. Because most restaurants have their menu online, it’s easy to see what they offer.
Reading is on you though. It’s up to you to read the full menu description, see if substitutions are available or allowed and if the item falls into your particular dietary needs.
One place I’ve found that’s close by (to me and my neck of the woods) and very good, is the Herb Box at DC Ranch. They offer several vegetarian and vegan selections and have no problem substituting items.
A menu item I’ve grown fond of is their Vegan Nosh Platter. With the options to choose from a gazpacho soup sip (just enough!), the tomato-mango-olive salad, quinoa tabouleh with apricot, avocado, parsley and mint, or the cilantro-jalapeno edamame hummus you can’t go wrong. If you’re really hungry, you can have all of it. It’s a lot of food when you order all the items, so be prepared!
Something else I really enjoy are the sweet-potato soft tacos. With grilled onion, spicy roasted corn-avocado salsa, cotija, crèma, baby greens, black bean-mango salad, it’s a filling meal even for non-vegetarians. The corn tortillas are so good, the flavor is so authentic, I could just eat those and be happy.
Herb Box also offers Gluten Free items that are marked as such in their menu, making it easy for those with sensitivity to gluten to order without having to make changes.
For the over 21 crowd, be sure to try the Blackberry Mojito. I’m a big fan of mojitos, my favorite is made with pineapple juice, but the Blackberry is a definite second favorite.
