Les Miserables is at the movie theaters. It has been an international event since its beginning in 1862. Victor Hugo was the playwright who wrote about the state of the French nation after the deposition of the Royal family and prior to a stable government of any kind. The language is French and it is a musical, for the theater productions.
The film version hit the theaters on Christmas Day, Dec 25, 2012 and will continue playing throughout January. It is sung in English, though not very well by some of the actors. This film is definitely an actor’s paradise with few good singers. The scenery provides the dismal state of affairs left after the French revolution decimated the entire country.
The realism of the life of a prisoner is terrible to consider, not only the work load but also the fact they will be hunted down for life if given parole. The other side of the real world is the life of women in Paris society. Not all of it was nice; in fact much of it was based on the French naval power needing women. Industrialization did not make life better nor was there a way out for children without parents.
Anne Hathways plays the main female who requires us to show her mercy. It is her child who receives the actual life she should have had, ending in a fairy tale. Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe play the protagonists who overshadow the rest of the plot. They are both marvelous as their respective roles.
This is a British Film directed by Tom Hooper and produced by Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner, Debra Hayward, and Cameron Mackintosh. The premiere was on Dec 5, 2012 at the London Empire Theater in Leicester Square. It has been released in the United States prior to being released in the United Kingdom.
This film version is worth seeing but be aware not all of the singing Is meant to be understood, although the plot is obvious to those familiar with basic European History. The outcome of the child and the prisoner are the main points of the film, not the actors. Get some popcorn and enjoy the show.
