The Leonardo offers a night of learning and libations through Leo Libations on the first Thursday evening of the month at 7 p.m. Join wine educator James Santangelo of the Wine Academy of Utah who, together with The Leonardo’s chef de cuisine Zanetta Jones, create a new tasting and pairing adventure each class. Whether focusing on a different wine region or educational element, attendees will be delighted with fresh tastes and new wines.
The remaining class schedule for Leo Libations includes the Basics of Food & Wine Pairing on Thursday, April 3, 2014 that features six wines of different styles and paired small bites for $50 per person. On May 1, Leo Libations will bring you Wines of Spain—a region booming with quality, diversity and value—for $55 per person.
I attended the March Leo Libations which highlighted the Wines of Burgundy—a region I’ll be visiting in just a few weeks! The format of the class used various learning styles to offer a lot of educational value to all in attendance. Jimmy’s effervescent demeanor makes everyone feel like they are at the very best party while his slides, maps and tasting sheets highlight key points and learning objectives.
We learned about the region’s various grape varietals in addition to how to interpret a French wine label, determine a wine’s body style and pair food and wines for optimal guest enjoyment. Chef Jones whimsical gastronomic creations matched up nicely to the selected wines of the evening. In particular, the first course of pesto flatbread with candied walnuts, apples, kale and brie really elevated the Simonnet-Febvre Chablis while the fourth wine, the Louis Latour Marsannay, accompanied the earthy truffle and Cremini mushroom tart topped with candied pancetta, arugula and herb oil well.
The evening not only proved delicious, it was an educational foray into the sometimes overwhelming world of wine.
