If you haven't seen the film Lee Daniels - The Butler, maybe you should. The film has grossed nearly $100 million dollars since it was released around August 17th. I know many people will wait till it's on video, however, there is nothing like seeing a film of this magnitude in the movie theater. It has moments of laughter, sadness, anger, compassion and more. The film takes us on a journey that began on a plantation in the south through significant social and political change in the United States to the present day.
Kudos goe to Forrest Whitaker for his portrayal of Cecil Gaines who is the butler and Oprah Winfrey for her role as Gloria Gaines the wife of Cecil. I think this is Winfrey's best acting job on film. Whitaker is terrific as always. These two and the film definitely should receive Oscar nominations next year. Another actor who did well in the film is Oscar winning actor Cuba Gooding, Jr for his role as a White House butler.
This film is loosely based on the life Eugene Allen who was a butler in the White House. Other actors of note in this film are Robin Williams, Terrence Howard, Jane Fonda and Lenny Kravitz. If you weren't around during the 1960's, there is much in this film that you will learn about. On the other hand, if you were around at that time, it will remind you how things were and how things have changed somewhat. There are lessons about love, life and perserverance in this film. Those are things we can all relate to. Don't wait for the video, go see this film at the theater. It is well worth the price.
