The word Legend gets thrown around in the music scene way too easily, but few musicians truly earn this title. Other times when a musician has earned the title of Legend, it's used as a politically correct way to say that musician is "over the hill" or dead. I'm not politically correct so you can draw your own conclusions on how I define who is or isn't a Legend. Saturday October 12th the Ramona Mainstage in North San Diego County hosted a once in a life time night of true music Legends. I was honored to cover it and bring to you a little bit of the magic I experienced.
Among the names on my list of Legends who performed this evening included: Mandy Lion (WWIII), George Lynch (Dokken, Lynch Mob), Sin Quirin (Ministry), Lez Warner (The Cult), Dan McNay (Montrose), Andrew Freeman (Hurricane), Vivian Campbell (Dio, Def Leppard), Vinny Appice (Black Sabbath, Dio, WWIII), Jimmy Bain (Rainbow, Dio, WWIII), and Claude Schnell (Dio). That's right, all these guys took the stage in one night to bring a once in a lifetime moment in music. I can only define it by saying, there was the moon landing - and then there was this show - that is how monumental and historic this show was.
If you missed the show you missed a top notch lineup that included: Against the Ordinary, a cover band called "Get Rockin'", Mandy Lion with special guests George Lynch & Sin Quirin, and Last in Line featuring all of the original DIO line-up excluding the late great Ronnie James Dio.
Against the Ordinary opened the show. Many of you have not heard of this band YET. I say that because I have seen this band play 2 times now and they have only played 3 shows. So how did they, a new band based in the Corona area, get on this bill? Take a listen to them and you will know why. The band is young not only in how long they have been a band, but in age as well. As young as they are in years and experience, many of the members have been playing music most of their short lives. The band has a Classic Rock/Punk sound and feeling. They perform originals but they also do a spot on cover of Alice Coopers "18". To see for yourself, check out the live music video ROCKwell UnScene shot at this show by clicking the following link... http://youtu.be/pP7OxEKpzdo When they play this song you can’t help but stare in awe as they channel Alice himself. If you are looking for a new band to add to your list of must see bands, Against the Ordinary is it.
Get Rockin' is a cover band and a local favorite that brought a home town crowd out to rock to songs that we all know and love. They kept the show flowing in preparation for the big guns about to explode.
Mandy Lion: Need I say more? A true music legend singing since he was a 11 year old kid tearing up German clubs, and never stopping. Music is his life and his passion. “This is like a family reunion" Mandy told me after the show. He was referring to the fact that so many friends came out, drove a hell of a long way to rock with the one and only Mandy Lion, and that he was playing with other Legends, one in particular, for the first time in 20 years. I am fairly certain if you cut Mandy open his veins would bleed Rock 'n Roll. As a veteran of the music scene he has played stadiums, dive bars and all in between. Along his journey he has crossed paths with some of the greatest musicians that have taken the stage. Mandy's first WWIII line up back in the late 1980's included Vinny Appice and Jimmy Bain, who were playing with Last in Line this evening. His line-up for this evening (under the name Mandy Lion) included: Lez Warner (The Cult) - drums, Dan McNay (Montrose) - bass, young gun guitar virtuoso Toni Aleman, plus special guest guitarists George Lynch (Dokken & Lynch Mob) and Sin Quirin (Ministry) . The whole experience left me with a music hang over and the knowledge of knowing that this experience was a one and only lifetime show. Last in Line - who are they? They are the original members of DIO (Vivian Campbell, Vinny Appice, Jimmy Bain and Claude Schnell) with the exception of the eternal Rock God Ronnie James Dio (Horns Up!!!). Lead vocals, which are exceptionally difficult when following in Ronnie's footsteps, were performed by Andrew Freeman (Hurricane). It was surreal to see the reincarnation of DIO. Fans came together to share the music, the memories, and the Legend that is DIO. I have to say Andrew Freeman does justice to Ronnie and his incredible voice (and you have to be something special to step into those shoes). This line up will not disappoint you. In fact, this is a line up and show that you cannot miss. If Last in Line hits a stage near you - go, run, be up front, throw your horns up and pay honor to this still Legendary band and honor the Rock God - DIO!
