"Your fantasy is our reality. Welcome to the Pleasure Garden.", declares Orchid: The Show, and they're totally right! If you're looking for a sexy break from your run-of-the-mill weekend activities, consider Orchid. It was just extended (again!) until February 3rd, so this weekend is your last chance to enjoy the visual treat in Miami's Midtown.
The show's website explains "Orchid is a dream world of song, dance, glamour, burlesque, aerial acrobatics and variety arts set inside a seductively surreal Pleasure Garden installed at the gateway to Miami's Design District."
Orchid does do a great job of providing a surreal, picturesque setting for two hours of eye candy and awesome stunts. It's fantastically pretty. If you want to make a night of it you can make reservations at the pop-up restaurant with a delicious menu put together by the talented Michele Bernstein (head chef and owner of nearby Crumb Miami), then have some drinks in the sensuous Pleasure Garden that wraps around the theater before the show. It's a great chance to dive into an adult fantasy land and forget the heart of Miami lies right outside.
Now while it is visually appealing, don't expect a complete masterpiece. There are certainly some aspects that are lacking. The music is an amateur mix of mostly cheesy songs with mediocre production. The choreography could use some originality, and I kept wondering when the women would perform some acrobatics alongside their very impressive male counterparts, but - opening act aside - they didn't. Ultimately I suspect the dancers, or "flowers" rather, are more talented than the show allowed them to display. However, it is still a solid effort at a rare type of performance, and as such it is beautiful.
The highlights will be contortionist Irina Naumenko (the opening act, so don't miss her!), the stage and costume design, and Kitty Bang Bang, who is both wildly sexy and charmingly funny throughout the production.
