Larry Zalkind, accomplished international trombonist, performed an enchanting recital Monday evening at Ball State University. Wowing, in concert with Kathryn Goodson, herself an international soloist and collaborative pianist, they played repertoire that was entertaining and informed (complete list below). The two musicians are on a recital tour. Music lives in the ears of the crowded hall as Zalkind fills the room with his rich and melodic trombone tone.
Zalkind performed lyrically, from memory, for an hour before working with the universities students. A 12 year old trombone student of a local middle school came with his family. This reporter, a trombone student, can only wish I had the opportunity to hear Zalkind's performance and wisdom at that age!
Mr. Zalkind is the principal trombonist with the Utah Symphony, has three solo albums, performs in the Summit Brass, and is a professor for the University of Utah. He is about to begin a position at Eastman School of Music, a prestigious conservatory in Rochester, New York. Mrs. Goodson is based in Ann Arbor, where she serves several roles at University of Michigan and in the community.
The recital is only one of many (often free or $5, confirm via link) put on by the music department at Ball State University.
