"In a world..." Those are the words that have begun so many movie trailers of the past. It was a phrase made famous by movie trailer voice over artist Don LaFontaine. The movie In a World... opens with footage of Don LaFontaine as it is being announced that he has died. Who will replace him as the king of movie trailers? Who would even dare to attempt to carry on with use of the phrase made famous by Don LaFontaine?
In a World... is a look into the world of voice over artists. Specifically it looks into a group of voice over artists all vying to take over the position left by the departed Don LaFontaine. Don LaFontaine was a real voice over artist who has passed on, but this movie is a work of fiction. The voice over artists looking to take over his spot are all characters created from a script by actress Lake Bell. Actually, she is no longer just an actress, but also the writer and director of this film.
In a World... is for the most part a comedy, but it does have drama throughout as these characters deal with various different serious situations. It's just serious enough that the characters seem like real people, but always funny enough to stay within the comedy genre. The characters in the movie are all funny in their own different ways, but have lives beyond the jokes. Lake Bell does a good job creating believable characters without ever letting them get too serious and drown out the comedy. However, because the drama never gets too serious it also never leaves that big of an impact on the viewer.
Lake Bell has created an enjoyable, but light movie in her first outing as writer, director, and lead actress. There is plenty of comedy throughout, but it all comes in small forms rather than big gags. There are little lines of dialogue throughout that make one laugh instead of big set pieces. The drama is never too dramatic so it doesn't really make much impact. Maybe in her next outing she can take the comedy and drama just a little bit further to give a more lasting impact.
That said, In a World... is still a movie worth paying attention to. There are plenty of interesting characters created by Lake Bell for this film and all of them are acted out in great fashion by an excellent cast. The movie is a joy to watch and truly feels like something different from what would come out of the movie studio system. In a World... may not have the most mind-blowing plot, but it is a fun look into a world that hasn't really been showcased before in cinema by a woman who is just beginning to find her voice.
