According to the website for the Small Winemakers Collection, La Tunella winery’s history goes back to the 1960’s. A farmer Min Zorzettig who made wine for his family decided, with his sons to start to make wine commercially. The wines did so well each of his sons; Livio, Francesco and Giuseppe each started their own wineries. Livio passed away a few months after starting the winery; his wife Gabriella kept the winery going with her young teenaged sons, Massimo and Marco, who oversee the winery today. To avoid confusion with other family members in the area they renamed their winery La Tunella, a farmhouse near the wine cellar. La Tunella is located in the Colli Orientali, in Venezia-Friuli-Guilia. The Colli Orientali is famous for its eastern facing hills and great sun exposure that the grapes love.
La Tunella, Pinot Grigio, 2012 is pale straw yellow in color. The nose has hints of lemon, pear, tropical fruits and wet slate. The palate starts with tangy citrus, lemon and lime peels, then tropical fruits such as kiwi and pineapple. The finish has plenty of minerals with crisp mouth puckering acidity.
La Tunella is a serious Pinot Grigio, medium bodied and plenty of character. Drink the La Tunella with a roasted chicken dish, even a light pork loin preparation. La Tunella is a serious wine, so enjoy it.
