La Perla Habana Black Pearl line of cigars was considered the top cigars for 2008.
The roll: the jet-black wrapper with its oily sheen distract from the veiny, slightly bumpy and visibly seamy appearance. The ring brings it back together while presenting a challenging looking smoke. Despite the outward appearance this cigar appears to be well constructed and visually intriguing.

The light: the pre-light draw revealed aged tobacco and a surprising coffee-like flavor. The initial draw was flawless. In that initial draw was a demonstrative peppery overtone. The pepper flavor might lead one to wonder if the cigar should be labeled ‘black pepper'. However, the pepper gives way to a flavor aptly described as burnt wood into the second third. In the final third the peppery overtones make a comeback without overpowering the palette. Overall this is not a very complex cigar. However, the consistency of the flavor gives credit to the cigar and the manufacturer. A medium-bodied cigar that stays true to form throughout.
The burn: Overall the burn was even with an occasional unevenness that was self-correcting. The ash held firm for the first inch then gave way to intermittent flaking followed by sudden departure. Using standard practice, this cigar required several re-lights, however that does not significantly affect the enjoyment of this stick.
A cigar puffer may enjoy this stick, however it is not recommended for full enjoyment of this sticks complexity. Not recommended for novice cigar smokers due to its' medium-bodied flavor combined with the peppery overtones. Also, this stick would be good for walking the dog and other outdoor chores.
At five bucks a stick the price is a little high, though it may be found online for less. Despite the gnarly appearance of this stick; the light, burn, and price is the saving grace of this stick. Consider this stick to rate in the low eighties.
This stick can be found at Kingston Cigar Shop in West Ashley.
