Writer/Director Shane Black has made many films that are set at Christmas time. The first movie he directed was a Christmas film called "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang," which was released in 2005.
"Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" stars Robert Downey Jr. as Harry Lockhart, a clumsy thief who wanders into an audition while on the run from cops. At the audition, he gives a convincing performance and gets flown to Hollywood. In Hollywood, he meets a homosexual private eye known as Gay Perry (played by Val Kilmer), who has to train Harry for his role. He also meets Harmony Faith Lane (played by Michelle Monaghan), an attractive young actress who was a childhood friend of Harry. One night, Gay Perry helps Harry prepare for his role, and they witness a murder. Soon, the three of them are involved in a very complicated murder mystery.
"Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" is a very funny movie with a very dark sense of humor. One of the best scenes in the film is the audition scene. This scene is similar to the scene in "The Fabulous Baker Boys" where Michelle Pfeiffer's character auditions to be a singer. In both scenes, the character gives a great audition. But unlike "The Fabulous Baker Boys," the audition scene in this film is played for laughs.
This movie features great performances. Robert Downey Jr. is very good as Harry. Although he is a criminal, we still root for him. Val Kilmer is also strong as the no nonsense gay private eye. They make a great team. Michelle Monaghan does good work as well as Harmony, who likes Harry, but often gets mad at him. Another strong performance is from Corbin Bernsen, who plays a former actor.
For fans of dark comedy, "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" is a great choice to watch at Christmas time.
