Killers is billed as a romantic comedy. Don't get your hopes up on it living up to either of those premises. Here's how it breaks down. Jennifer Kornfeldt (Katherine Heigl), predictably has recently been dumped by her boyfriend, and goes on vacation with her parents (played by Tom Selleckand Catherine O’Hara) to France. While there, she meets Spencer Aimes (Ashton Kutcher) and, once again predictably, the two have an instant interest in one another.
As you can guess by the previews for this movie, Aimes has a secret as he has just completed a hit since he’s a contract killer for the CIA. His handler/boss Holbrooke (played by the great Martin Mull) congratulates him on the good job he's done and sends him on to the next. Spencer Aimes has decided that he would rather settle down with Jennifer so he quits his career as a killer, which he obviously keeps secret from Jennifer.
A few years pass and the two are happily married and Spencer has his own construction business. That changes when Holbrooke contacts him for one more job. He predictably declines the job and soon a $20 million dollar bounty is on his head and contract killers are sent on his trail. At this point, Jennifer becomes aware of his secret life as she is thrown in the middle of the bedlam.
Killers seems to suffer from identity crisis. It wanted to be a dark comedy, but isn't dark enough. It wanted to be a romantic comedy, but too many people get killed at inopportune times for it to be romantic. Ashton Kutcher is way too goofy, especially his voice, to be taken seriously as a contract killer. Katherine Heigl's constant cheeriness bordered on goofy as well. They might have been able to pull it off if there was any chemistry between the two leads.
The Killers DVD is presented in widescreen (2.35:1). The special features are nothing to get excited about. There is a 11-minute making of called “Killer Chemistry,” a 1-minute gag reel, 4 whole minutes of deleted scenes, 6 minutes of alternative scenes, and 5 minutes of extended scenes.
Killers is rated PG-13 for violent action, sexual material and language.
Bottom line: If you need to waste 100 minutes, rent this movie. For a better alternative try 1997s Grosse Pointe Blank.
