Just like the timeless 80’s classic A Christmas Story, my wife and I frequent Chinese restaurants during the holidays. Don’t get me wrong. I enjoy throwing a meal together for the family but with few family members in Florida, a holiday meal with all the fixings usually leaves too many leftovers. So we go out. And ever since my son was born we’ve done Chinese.
I love good American food: ribs, beef, pulled pork, but I seldom find a meal that compares to my own, so when I’m out I don’t order something I can make because just like fat bastard said, “Everybody likes their own brand.” And the one thing I have never been able to replicate is Chinese cuisine.
We have had some luck with Asian jems around our small slice of Orlando, but the best one for quality and price is a small place on the end of a Sedano’s marketplace, a stones throw from Kissimmee. The Green House.
Just one street over from The Loop on Osceola parkway, The Green House will save you a couple bucks before or after a busy shopping day and their no nonsense service will get you in and out with something left for later. My wife and I frequent the lunchtime hours and have eaten almost all their lunchtime values.
I judge Chinese restaurants mainly by their rice. If they take the time and effort to perfect the rice that comes free with your meal, then think of the effort that goes into their dishes and the Green House serves the best. The loose flavorful rice adorned with large hunks of marinated meat is so good we have ordered it by itself to accompany our American-Chinese concoctions. But the rice isn’t the only draw to this tiny establishment, their meals are awesome.
Double Cooked Pork and Egg Foo Young are two of my favorites where my wife prefers the Szechuan style beef and Moo Goo Gai Pan. Her being the veggie lover these dishes are piled high with large fresh vegetables, and my perfectly cooked pork medallions never steer me wrong.
Many times we have brought home leftovers for dinner and at under six bucks a serving the price is very reasonable. If you are in a hurry call it in and within fifteen minutes you will be walking with a fresh hot meal.
