Sequels are becoming a regular thing with Hollywood movies, these days so the announcement of the superhero comedy "Kick-Ass 2" was no surprise. The film picks up after the events of the original film, when more and more superheroes have taken to the streets with masks to fight crime. Filled with plenty of action, violence, swearing and high school drama, the sequel continues on the popular themes of the first film, without developing anything new.
Dave Lizewski has decided to team up with the Justice Forever team as Kick-Ass, to take out more bad guys without getting beat up as much. Mindy MacCready (Chloe Moretz) is struggling to adjust to the life of high school, finding herself taken in by the populars despite her tomboyish appearance and constant insults. However, Hit Girl manages to use her fighting skills to make friends, but her true calling takes over. The film does a good job showing how cruel high school can be.
Colonel Star and Stripes (Jim Carrey) leads the Justice Forever team to connections with the mob after training them to fight and protect the innocent. The character's role is small but effective in letting justice prevail while the rest of the world fears superheroes (to the point where police arrest anyone with a mask). The other members of the team have important yet different roles which carry the film. Meanwhile, Red Mist has reformed to become the evil villain The Motherfucker, who dedicates his life to stopping Kick-Ass.
The brutality and comedy of the first film is present, as are the emotional moments when the characters realize their potential. The film doesn't offer anything new, and is really predictable from start to finish. Fans of the original film will probably like the sequel.
