Don’t double down on KFC’s sandwich, unless you want to waste money. The chicken galore sandwich sounds like a good idea. Two boneless breaded chicken breasts encase two slices of pepper jack cheese, two undersized bacon strips, and the Colonel’s special sauce. What can do wrong?
The $5 combo includes the sandwich, a side order and a soda. The sandwich, which is breadless, has 530 calories, 32 grams of fat, and 1,380 mg of sodium. And there’s the problem. The sandwich has too much sodium to truly be enjoyable. Pair this with the delicious potato wedges and you might have to see a physician afterwards.
The bacon is hardly visible when you get the sandwich. In fact, after opening the sandwich in half there was no sign of the cured meat. The two slices of cheese had hidden the small bits of bacon.
Grabbing a hold of the sandwich can proof difficult. Since there are no buns, your hand(s) will get greasy. You can choose to use a napkin, but make sure you double wrap it. The greasiness from the two fried chicken breasts, the Colonel's sauce, the melted cheese mixed and the bacon fat will drip with every bite you take.
The main issue is not using bread. Bread acts as a taste base. It neutralizes most overpowering flavors and can at times enhance the flavors of complementory ingredients. I grabbed the buns from a spare snacker I bought and used it on the sandwich - it really made a difference.
Would I recommend this sandwich? Na. (Periodic table joke)
The employees at the 11585 Quail Roost Drive location were apologetic about it and exchanged the sandwich for the grilled version without issue. The location does share its space with a Taco Bell and can sometimes be chaotic and slow, but at least it's clean most of the time.
