The incredible new downtown Orlando venue, The Abbey, played host to The Kevin Maines Band last Saturday night. The three piece band, Kevin Maines (vocals, guitar), Todd Warsing (bass), and Dave Marder (drums), enthralled the crowd with their soulful, Blues Rock grooves during their hour long set. With every song they played, the attentive audience grew larger as the spectators became fans.
The band opened their set with several originals that will hopefully be on Maines’ highly anticipated forthcoming CD including “Comes and Goes” and “Low Country Love Song.” Their song “2 Day Blues” was a highlight of the set with its groovy musical arrangement and terrific, catchy lyrics. The set also included “Inner City Blues” by Marvin Gaye and Curtis Mayfield’s “We're a Winner.”
Maines doesn’t say much during his sets, he generally lets his music speak for him. He did open the show by saying “Every note I play tonight is dedicated to the Macho Man Randy Savage.”
Maines is a captivating guitar player to watch, well known as a talented slide player he also deftly switches between finger and pick playing. He and Warsing had a smooth groove going all during the show, ensuring the crowd felt the vibe as well as hearing the music. The band makes it easy to get lost in their fabulous jams. After the show Warsing remarked “I just love to play.”
