KENN: the cheeky, the nasty, and the funky

We Killed KENN, by KENN

At first listen “Still Pretty”, formerly titled “Crumble”, which features Chromatique, and its lines “I want a boy who is hung like a horse/I want a boy who is gentle but coarse” and “I want a boy who gets down like and animal/Eats me like a cannibal” are overwhelming. But there is a certain vulnerability depicted in great pop music these days that is found here. Outside of the graphic visuals, choice words describing oneself crumbling, being still pretty and ordinary make this more of a social statement than just the phallic imagery.

[[KENN]], whose real name is Kenneth Cifuentes, is tall, tattooed, with a certain amount of charm; possibly exuding from his quivering top lip or his thick voice. However, according to this set, even he is trying to find his place in the world, not to mention the music industry.

Still Pretty is an interesting story. I hear all these over sexualized songs by female artist like “S&M” by Rihanna and “If You Seek Amy” by Britney, [and] thought it would be interesting to hear a male voice singing the same sort of song and see the reaction. I like challenging gender roles. So that was the starting point. Think of it a s a really gay answer to Shania Twain's "Any Man of Mine" two decades later.”

The production of this track (and its parent EP) is pristine. The beats are dance-worthy, the hook is certainly there and the parties involved left room to inject these tunes with a certain element of longing. From the parental dismissal in “Super Heroes”, which certainly depicts the gender role issues he mentioned before, to the deception-filled “Empty”, We Killed KENN is a musical ride filled with many emotional obstacles.

Interestingly enough its beats and glassy imagery, by [[Andi Hedrick]], make this to be as cheerful and confident as they come. After all, KENN does wear a cute outfit and appears f***able from every angle (refer to “Last Words”).

Perhaps the goal was to kill KENN, but it seems he is very much alive and eager to please. And although the strong façade is just that, KENN is as lovable as the best of them.

We Killed KENN is out now via [[iTunes]], [[SoundCloud]], [[]], and streaming on [[Spotify]].
