Kathy Griffin throws down a blistering performance in Napa

Kathy Griffin live at the Uptown Theatre in Napa

Blue humor. Dirty jokes. Finding the absurdity in the celebrity. Pushing people’s buttons and making them squirm and then howl with laughter. That pretty much sums up Kathy Griffin’s blistering performance last night at the Uptown Theatre in downtown Napa.

My sides still hurt from last night's performance.

To be perfectly honest, it wasn’t Griffin’s potty mouth that surprised me, it was the fact that she has boundless energy. She barely took a breath, a pause, or even said the word “um” for the entire set that lasted for nearly an hour and a half. I’ve never seen anything like it.

No one and nothing was off limits. Justin Bieber, or as Griffin calls him, Justine, proved to be a great source of laughter as she plotted his trajectory from ‘that little lesbian with a guitar on YouTube” to the adventures he’s been having of late with his trainwreck of a father who, for whatever reason, has recently resurfaced.

Griffin delved deeply into the role she’s created for herself as the not-so-fun funhouse mirror of the celebrity world. She absolutely relishes the fact that every time a fellow celebrity see’s her coming they are at once thrilled and horrified that whatever is about to transpire will be cooked up into something painfully funny for Griffin’s next audience. It’s not hard to imagine these celebrities having to reassure themselves that it’s all in good fun in much the same way that there’s no such thing as bad press. Remember, if you don’t want someone to make fun of you, you probably shouldn’t overdose on cough syrup and race your yellow Lamborghini on the streets of Florida.

If you haven’t seen a show at the Uptown Theatre in downtown Napa yet, you are missing something truly remarkable.
