“The Oculus” is a new horror movie from the producer of "Paranormal Activity" and "Insidious" hitting theaters on April 11, 2014. This movie stars Karen Gillan ("Guardians of the Galaxy", "Doctor Who"), Brenton Thwaites ("Maleficent", "The Signal"), and a fancy mirror. "The Oculus" is based on the short film "Oculus: Chapter 3 - The Man with the Plan" by Mike Flanagan.
The premise of the story is that their father killed their mother and the brother and sister suffered such trauma that the young brother was placed in a mental hospital. The truth, at least according to the siblings, is that there is some unseen evil force living within the mirror that wants death and feeds on the souls of its victims, causing them to kill. All in all, this is a cool sounding premise for a great new horror movie and, if nothing else, an opportunity to see Karen Gillan expand to the horror genre before taking on the role of Nebula in this Summer’s blockbuster Marvel movie, "Guardians of the Galaxy".
From the trailer, there is a clear sense of the warping of perception, as can happen with a mirror that is curved, shaped, or damaged. The past and present come into conflict. The line between death and life is also blurred and distorted as the siblings have to not only relive the trauma of their youth, but seemingly battle their possessed father in the present. What is real and what is simply a reflection of the truth? That is the real question asked in “The Oculus” starting April 11, 2014.
