It’s unpretentious, delicious, affordable, and exotic. Owner Makoto Yoshino intended for this simple, modern, and elegant restaurant to represent the ultimate Japanese comfort food.
The menu is simple: beef, vegetarian, and chicken curries. Do not confuse these with Indian curries. Kale is the quintessential Japanese curry which bears no resemblance to Indian curries. Aside from the simple (and short) menu, Makoto Yoshino offers a few sides to add to the straightforward meal: e.g. spinach, hard- boiled eggs, or cheese.
Serving style is more or less self-serve. You order, pay, and bring your food to a table. You sit on raised tatami mats. The ambiance is welcoming and relaxing.
Everything is affordable. The beef kale is priced at $6.95. Brown rice will cost you only 50 cents extra. Drinks are a steal. Tea, soda, and bottled water are only $1 each. Beers are $2.50. These prices are food-truck prices, and yet, you have a comfortable place to sit and rest your weary feet.
If you are in downtown Portland, Kale is not to be missed.
