Was it somebody's karma or just "the luck of the draw" that the much needed rain seemed to coincide perfectly with the hours of yesterday's SF Half Marathon?
Whatever the reason, the rain didn't dampen the runners' spirits and the multitude of volunteers seemed upbeat in spite of the cold and wet.
I was delighted to be driven to the start on a Kaiser Oakland Bus with one of the most pleasant and competent bus drivers I've ever encountered.
While the wait at the starting area was a bit cold and damp, with temperatures in the 40's, the Pamakid Running Club kept us on schedule, only waiting for a final OK from the SF Police - a justified reason.
Held on Super Bowl Sunday for many years and a tradition for more than 30 years, the course is no stranger to rain or inclement weather. Well, it is in San Francisco, in February, after all. Both 5K and half marathon courses were well staffed with course volunteers and aid stations.
The finish provided warm, light foil blankets and snacks. A little warm soup or hot chocolate would have gone a long way and it was definitely disappointing to find formerly dry clothes in a wet plastic bag, set out on the pavement in the rain.
The Pamakid Running Club, Course Management with RhodyCo Productions and all those volunteers deserve a big hand for working in difficult weather conditions. Kaiser Permanente gets a high five for the fun bus ride and sponsoring the race.
Would I do this race again? I'm not sure about the half marathon but maybe the 5K, just in case it's raining...
