“I’m not worthy” said the front-row spectators while bowing to JW Jones. The viewers predicted an out of sight future for the 32-year-old blues guitarist, songwriter and vocalist, and his fellow guitarist Laura Greenberg on bass and drummer Jansen Richard, who are Canada’s top touring band. They played Feb. 6-7 in Key Largo as the opening act of Bayside Grille’s six-week Bluesfest.
Indeed, as they head out of the Florida Keys to Jupiter and Tallahassee, Fla., the band looks forward to their Feb. 13 gig at Chicago’s Buddy Guy’s Legends, home of big-time blues artists (www.buddyguy.com). Playing a mix of blues classics and their own amazing music, some from their latest “Seventh Hour” CD, JW Jones performed under an open-air tiki just after sunset when the temperature at the band’s 7 p.m. start time was a balmy 75 degrees. Dolled up in a long-sleeved shirt, tie, pants and closed-toes shoes, JW’s smoking hot guitar-playing made him remove his tie clip and solid-collared tie after just 20 minutes into the show.
The plentiful crowd, primarily dressed in T-shirts and shorts, egged JW on and told him next time, flip flops! He didn’t know any blues player who could get away with flip flops save one, he said, referring to some ultimately cool blues player.
If you missed JW Jones (www.jw-jones.com), you missed an amazing time but you can aim to be at the next Bayside Grille Bluesfest performance, set for Feb. 13-14 at 6:30 p.m. with Harper and the Midwest Kind, which plays “world blues fusion from Australia with his didgeridoo.” Harper also plays the harmonica.
Robert DiGiorgio, owner of Bayside Grille and Sunset Bar at mile marker 99.5 bayside (turn south of Salvation army store and north of Café Largo), who is hosting this elite group of international blues stars said, “This outstanding event brings live entertainment from some of today’s greatest blues stars to our community.” Biscuit Miller & The Mix, Todd Wolfe, Joel DaSilva & Midnight Howl, the Rockin’ Jake Band, Braille Blues Daddy Bryan Lee, a New Orleans guitar legend, and the Blues Power Band all are set to play in the Florida Keys.
