Journey to Nyx – White Cards
Yes, Theros block is now complete. Now we have to start getting into the swing for Block constructed and we need to start thinking about the future when Return to Ravnica block rotates in October. To do this we need to grind through the reviewing of the cards that are going to force our draft picks, change up our current decks, and maybe even start some brewing gears moving around.
So let's get the ball rolling with the white cards.
Aegis of the Gods – 1W – Enchantment Creature – Human Soldier – R – You have hexproof. 2/1. Lols, so Death and Taxes gets some sideobard love verses TES, ANT, and High Tide. Still a lagacy staple card that will make back the money you spent on the pack.
Ajani's Presence – W – Instant – C – Strive – Ajani's Presence cost 2W more to cast for each target beyond the first. Any number of target creatures each get +1/+1 and gain indestructible until end of turn. Okay, so here we have a cool card that turn on the Heroic cards in the block, still paying 2WW for two creatures to get +1/+1 and indestructible for one turn seems like it’s just a combat trick for Limited.
Akroan Mastiff – 3W – Creature – Hound – C – W, tap: Tap target creature. 2/2. Every Limited format needs this effect. At this point, it seems that every set gets a white tap down dork.
Armament of Nyx – 2W – Enchantment - Aura – C – Enchant creature. Enchanted creature has double strike as long as it's an enchantment. Otherwise, prevent all damage that would be dealt by enchanted creature. So either my enchantement dork gets better or I can turn your dude into a wall. Again another staple of Limited card designs.
Banishing Light – 2W – Enchantment – U – When Banishing Light enters the battlefield, exile target nonland permanent an opponent controls until Banishing Light leaves the battlefield. Yes, we get a new O-ring that is worded so we wont end up in a rare O-ring loop. Once Detention Sphere rotates this opens control up from needing to be UW. Also this makes mono-white a much better deck.
Dawnbringer Charioteers – 2WW – Creature – Human Soldier – R – Flying, lifelink. Heroic – Whenever you cast a spell that targets Dawnbringer Charioteers, put a +1/+1 counter on Dawnbringer Charioteers. 2/4. Now that is a Heroic creature. Flying, lifelink, and gets bigger when you target it. I have to say this is going to be a limited bomb, and if we have the right mix of trigger spells this might make the leap to a Heroic deck post rotation. Going to say this is going to be awesome in Block.
Deicide – 1W – Instant – R – Exile target enchantment. If the exiled card is a God card, search its controller's graveyard, hand, and library for any number of cards with the same name as that card and exile them, then that player shuffles his or her library. Finally we get the answer to the gods and Detention Sphere. Mono-white is starting to look much better.
Dictate of Heliod – 3WW – Enchantment – R – Flash. Creatures you control get +2/+2. That 5 mana converted mana cost is making me think this is going to be a Commander tech card. Still a bomb in Limited as you flash this in after blocking.
Eagle of the Watch – 2W – Creature – Bird – C – Flying, vigilance. 2/1. Nice beater for Limited.
Eidolon of Rhetoric – 2W – Enchantment Creature – Spirit – U – Each player can't cast more than one spell a turn. ¼. Too slow for Legacy but I'm sure it will see play in Modern.
Font of Vigor – 1W – Enchantment – C – 2W, Sacrifice Font of Vigor: You gain 7 life. The font cycle is just nice for Limited so you bait enchantment removal, dodge counter magic, and build up devotion. Still on it's own this is nothing special.
Godsend – 1WW – Legendary Artifact – Equipment – M – Equipped creature gets +3/+3. Whenever equipped creature blocks or becomes blocked by one or more creatures, you may exile one of those creatures. Opponent's can't cast cards with the same name as cards exiled with Godsend. Equip 3. I very much feel that when this finds a home it will break a format wide open. Once you are forced into blocking or attacking into this you start having dead cards in Constructed decks. I really think this is going to get some love in Legacy sideboards.
Harvestguard Alseids – 2W – Enchantment Creature – Hymph – C – Constellation – Whenever Harvestguard Alseids or another enchantment enters the battlefield under your control, pervent all damage that would be dealt to target creature this turn. 2/3. Yeah, just a combat trickster for Limited.
Lagonna-Band Trailblazer – W – Creature – Centaur Scout – C – Heroic – Whenever you cast a spell that targets Lagonna-Band Trailblazer, put a +1/+1 counter on Lagonna-Band Trailblazer. 0/4. this is an awesome turn one play for any hero/voltron deck in Limited.
Launch the Fleet – W – Sorcery – R – Strive – Launch the Fleet cost 1 more to cast for each target beyond the first. Until end of turn, any number of target creatures each gain “Whenever this creature attacks, put a 1/1 white Soldier creature token onto the battlefield tapped and attacking.” If any of the Strive cards see play this will be the one. I'm really wanting to play some mono-white aggro with this.
Leonin Iconoclast – 3W – Creature – Cat Monk – U – Heroic – Whenever you cast a spell that targets Leonin Iconoclast, destroy target enchantment creature an opponent controls. 3/2. Awesome sauce for Limtied. Totally wins the voltron battles.
Mortal Obstinacy – W – Enchantment – Aura – C – Enchanted creature you control. Enchanted creature gets +1/+1. Whenever enchanted creature deals combat damage to a player, you may sacrifice Mortal Obstinacy. If you do, destroy target enchantment. This has Limited written all over it. Triggers Heroic, pumps, and works as later enchantment removal.
Nyx-Fleece Ram – 1W – Enchantment Creature – Sheep – U – At the beginning of your upkeep, you gain 1 life. 0/5. That's a fat sheep. This will make Limited annoying as hell. With all the evasion tricks and removal in Standard I don't see this being more that a Limited wall/bestow target, but what a bestow target. Hands downs, the best first pick for any white bestow deck.
Oppressive Rays – W – Enchantment – Aura – C – Enchant creature – Enchanted creature can't attack or block unless its controller pays 3. Activated abilities of enchanted creature cost 3 more to activate. Lols, I think we have an awesome hate for Pack Rat in mono-white. Also the becomes a great removal card in Limited. I like cards like this that force you opponents to have to waste mana. If you opponent has to keep up mana to block then they are forced to slow down while you quickly out pace them.
Oreskos Swiftclaw – 1W – Creature – Cat Warrior – C – 3/1. Yup, time to play some mono-white aggro. In Limited this is a great bestow target. I'm loving this set just for all these great Bestow targets that are just as good in competitive aggro decks.
Phalanx Formation – 2W – Instant – U – Strive – Phalanx Formation costs 1W more to cast for each target beyond the first. Any number of target creatures each gain double strike until end of turn. I'm starting to come around to Strive of combat tricks. This is just here to turn on Heroic but double strike and first strike are the best tricks for combat. With Strive on the combat tricks you get more millage out of them in Limtied. I'm sure that Strive cards will see much Cube love.
Quarry Colossus – 5WW – Creature – Giant – U – When Quarry Colossus enters the battlefield, put target creature into its owner's library just beneath the top X cards of that library, where X is the number of plains you control. 5/6. For Limited this is some okay removal. Chances are about four/five plains will be in play when you cast this, and the rest will be off colored in Limited, so you get 5/6 for a few turns while they have to dig up there bomb again. All this means it's much better in Limited, but I'll run this in my sealed pool if I have a heavy white core to my deck.
Reprisal – 1W – Instant – U – Destroy target creature with power 4 or greater. It can't be regenerated. More removal for Limited in a format were bestow voltrons can easily get to power four plus.
Sightless Brawler – 1W – Enchantment Creature – Human Warrior – U – Bestow 4W. Sightless Brawler can't attack alone. Enchanted creature get's +3/+2 and cant' attack alone. 3/2. Okay so this isn’t going to be a big card outside of Limited, but yeah, this will be good in Limited as you just cast dudes and turn them sideways all day long.
Skybind – 3WW – Enchantment – R – Constellation – Whenever Skybind or another enchantment enters the battlefield under your control, exile target nonenchantment permanent. Return that card to the battlefield under its owner's control at the beginning of the next end step. Awe hells yeah. Limited bomb. Cast this to strip off a bestow dork on there blocker and swing in to make them chump. Then just blink blockers with your own bestow dorks. I'm loving this for Limited. I can't wait to first pick this in draft and build a bestow build around it.
Skyspear Cavalry – 3WW – Creature – Human Soldier – U – Flying. Double strike. 2/2. Solid creature for Limited. Give it some pumps and just ride it to the win.
Stonewise Fortifier – 1W – Creature – Human Wizard – C – 4w: Prevent all damage that would be dealt to Stonewise Fortifier by target creature this turn. 2/2. Another awesome dork for Limited. This thing can chumb block for days in the late game.
Supply-Line Cranes – 3WW – Flying. When supply-Line Cranes enters the battlefield, put a +1/+1 counter on target creature. 2/4. We need a blink effect to breaks this but as it stands it's good for Limited.
Thetmos High Priest – 2W – Creature – Cat Cleric – U – Herioc – Whenever you cast a spell that targets Tethmos High Priest, return target creatur card with converted mana cost 2 or less from your graveyard to the battlefield. 2/3. Okay, this is nuts in Limited and will be played as sideboard tech for mono-white aggro. This just hates out removal to build up a fresh army of weenies.
All in all, I'm loving white in this set. I totally plan to play some mono-white online to mix things up from all this mono-black I've been playing. Also I'm totally planning on picking white as a devotion in one of the two pre-releases I'm playing this weekend. I better get to work on the blue review so I can get some rest before FNM starts.
