Journey to Nyx – The Rest
Yes, Theros block is now complete. Now we have to start getting into the swing for Block constructed and we need to start thinking about the future when Return to Ravnica block rotates in October. To do this we need to grind through the reviewing of the cards that are going to force our draft picks, change up our current decks, and maybe even start some brewing gears moving around.
Ajani, Mentor of Heroes – 3GW – Planeswalker – Ajani – M - +1: Distribute three +1/+1 counters among one, two, or three target creatures you control. +1: Look at the top four cards of your library. You may reveal an Aura, creature, or planeswalker card from among them and put it into your hand. Put the rest on the bottom of your library in any order. -8: You gain 100 life. Starting loyalty 4. So I get to make his defense stronger or dig for more defence, and if you can’t kill him before I get him to 8, or 9, I basically win the game. Yeah, that -8 ability is going to win so many MTGO Limited games by grinding out the clock. Still I think this isn’t going to see much competitive play simply because of mono-black packing Hero’s Downfall, also Deadbore is starting to see more play too. Once we get past rotation this might jump into Standard play as long as Hero’s DF is the only good planeswalker hate card.
Athreos, God of Passage – 1WB – Legendary Enchantment Creature – God – M – Indestructible. As long as your devotion to white and black is less than seven, Athreos isn't a creature. Whenever another creature you own dies, return it to your hand unless target opponent pays 3 life. 5/4. Limited bomb. This is hands down one of the top three gods for Limited. Now as for it's use in Standard, I want to brew a deck around this and Immortal Servitude. It's a great answer to wrath effects. I really think that this is going to see Standard play.
Desperate Stand – RW – Sorcery – U – Strive – Desperate Stand costs RW more to cast for each target beyond the first. Any number of target creatures each get +2/+0 and gain first strike and vigilance until end of turn. Yup, this is the combat trick that will force Boros heroes all day long in Limited.
Disciple of Deceit – UB – Creature – Human Rogue – U – Inspired – Whenever Diciple of Deceit becomes untapped, you may discard a nonland card. If you do, search your library for a card with the same converted mana cost as that card, reveal it, put it into your hand, then shuffle your library. 1/3. I'm loving it in Limited and thinking it might get a home in U/B Control. This is going to find a home in Commander. I think it might even be good enough to see playing with Immortal Servitude in a Modern brew.
Fleetfeather Cockatrice – 3GU – Creature – Cockatrice – U – Flash, flying, deathtouch. 5GU: Monstrosity 3. 3/3. Awesome creature for Limited. Flash it in to blcok and then you can bash face in the air. Yup, loving it.
Iroas, God of Victory – 2RW – Legendary Enchantment Creature – God – M – Indestructible. As long as your devotion to red and white is less than seven, Iroas isn't a creature. Prevent all damage that would be dealt to attacking creatures you control. 7/4. So Boros aggro is going to be a thing for the next year in Standard. Two of these are so going to just drop into the deck so you can bash face all day.
Keranos, God of Storms – 3UR – Legendary Enchantment Creature – God – M – Indestructible. As long as your devotion to blue and red is less than seven, Kreanos isn't a creature. Reveal the first card you draw on each of your turns. Whenever you reveal a land card this way, draw a card. Whenever you reveal a nonland card this way, Keranos deals 3 damage to target creature or player. 6/5. Sorry Ral, but you have been replaced in Maze’s End. I need two of these and fast. I just hope the rest of the enemy colored gods are as good and Iroas and Keranos, because I want to see a meta game that faces Izzet, Boros, Golgari, Orzhov , and Simic decks against each others. Even in an Izzet deck this is starting to make me want to cast blue and red cast together next standard season. Just the card advantage and free damage alone is like mana from Nyx.
Kruphix, God of Horizons – 3GU – Legendary Enchantment Creature – God – M – Indestructible. As long your devotion to green and blue is less than seven, Kruphix isn't a creature. You have no maximum hand size. If unused mana would empty from your mana pool, that mana becomes colorless instead. 4/7. Float all the mana! If only we had some fireballs in the block. Still I can see this becoming a General in Commander. I'm sure there will be a deck that breaks this in some format.
Nyx Weaver – 1BG – Enchantment Creature – Spider – U – Reach. At the beginning of your upkeep, put the top two cards of your library into your graveyard. 1BG, exile Nyx Weaver: Return target card from your graveyard to your hand. 2/3. That's it. I'm going to start brewing a Dredge deck for Block. Heck, I can port this into Standard Dredge.
Pharika, God of Affliction – 1BG – Legendary Enchantment Creature – God – M – Indestructible. As long as your devotion to black and green is less than seven, Pharika isn't a creature. BG: Exile target creature card from a graveyard. Its owner puts a 1/1 black and green Snake enchantment creature token with deathtouch onto the battlefield. 5/5. Sidebaord tech for G/B Dredge in Standard and Block. In draft this is just a way to delay till you have Dredge online.
Revel of the Fallen God – 3RRGG – Sorcery – R – Put four 2/2 red and green Satyr creature tokens with haste onto the battlefield. That's a bomb for Limited. Eight power over four dudes all with haste means some number of them are getting past blockers. This should end end games in Limited every time.
Stormchaser Chimera – 2UR – Creature – Chimera – U – Flying. 2UR: Scry 1, then reveal the top card of your library, Stormchaser Chimera gets +X/+0 until end of turn, where X is that card's converted mana cost. 2/3. Not a bad idea for Limited. Scry effect that forces blockers or can crush opponents with the evasion. All round good card.
Underworld Coinsmith – WB – Enchantment Creature – Human Cleric – U – Constellation – Whenever Underworld Coinsmith or another enchantment enters the battlefield under your control, you gain 1 life. WB, Pay 1 life: each opponent loses 1 life. 2/2. If only this said that your opponents lost 1 life as part of the Constellation ability. Then I would so try to break this with some kind of Egg style deck. Still, it’s a cool life gain trick for Limited.
Armory of Iroas – 2 – Whenever equipped creature attacks, put a +1/+1 counter on it. Equip 2. This is on the same level Trusty Machete as a first pick equipment for Limited. I can see myself taking this pack-one, pick-one and play it all day in Limited.
Chariot of Victory – 3 – Artifact – Equipment – U – Equipped creature has first strike, tample, and haste. Equip 1. So good in Limited. While not as powerful as the Armory, this sit packs a huge punch.
Deserter's Quarters – 2 – Artifact – U – You may choose not to untap Dester's Quarters during your untap step. 6, tap: Tap target creature. It doesn't untap during its controller's untap step for as long as Deserter's Quarters remains tapped. For an artifact based removal this is very good. Plus you can untap it to tap down a second blocker when you are ready to swing for the win. Totally an awesome Limited card.
Gold-Forged Sentinel – 6 – Artifact Creature – Chimera – U – Flying. 4/4. This is the kind of artifact dork you want to have in sealed deck when you are running short of playable cards.
Hall of Triumph – 3 – Legendary Artifact – R – As Hall of Triumph enters the battlefield, choose a color. Creatures you control of the chosen color get +1/+1. I think this is going to be a Commander only card as in Limited it forces you to be mono-colored. Now if you have a pool that supports mono-colors then this is good, but I like my two-color decks much better.
Mana Confluence – Land – R – Tap, Pay 1 life: Add one mana of any color to your mana pool. This has gotten a lot of hype about being the best new card for Constructed and I fully agree. Three and two colored decks are going to eat this up in Standard. Legacy and Vintage Dredge are going to replace Tranished Citidal with these. The only thing I don't agree with about this card is the $20 price pre-order price. Very sure this will drop in price after a month of drafting, but I think it will reach $30 by rotation. So I'm going to snap keep any I see in drafts.
Temple of Epiphany and Temple of Malady - The last of the scry lands are here and I totally agree with the name Epiphany for the Izzet one but Golgari so should have been the Temple of Rot.
Well that's the end of this set. I have to say this is one of the best multi-colored, artifact, and land sections of any set review I've done in a while. All the gods are totally awesome and will see a tune of play in a number of formats. The lands are all needed for Modern, Standard, and even Legacy. Lots of good cards all we have to do is start cracking packs and doing some drafting. Well, I'm going to start working on my draft plan for Dredge, you all have a good one.
