Journey to Nyx – Red Cards

Yes, Theros block is now complete. Now we have to start getting into the swing for Block constructed and we need to start thinking about the future when Return to Ravnica block rotates in October. To do this we need to grind through the reviewing of the cards that are going to force our draft picks, change up our current decks, and maybe even start some brewing gears moving around.

Akroam Line Breaker – 2R – Creature – Human Warrior – U -Heroic – Whenever you cast a spell that targets Akroan Line Breaker, Akroan Line Breaker gets +2/+0 and gains intimidate until end of turn. 2/1. Not bad at all for Limited. You put an ordeal on this guy and your opponent is going to have a bad day. You, I'd daraft this all day long.

Bearer of the Heavens – 7R – Creature – Giant – R – When Bearer of the Heavens dies, destroy all permanets at the beginning to the next end step. 10/10. I'm thinking this is just a Commander card, but what a Commander card. Cast this in a game and just hold a kill spell to nuke the board when things get out of hand, but other than some corner cases of decks that want this effect it's just a bulk rare.

Bladetusk Boar – 3R – Creature – Boar – C – Intimidate. 3/2. It was a good beater in Zendikar Limited, and in M13, and it will be in this Limited format too.

Blinding Flare – R – Sorcery – U – Strive – Blinding Flare cost R more to cast for each target beyond the first. Any number of target creatures can't block this turn. A great combat trick for Limited that you can also use to trigger you own heroic dorks. If you are Drafting red you will want this.

Cyclops of Eternal Fury – 4RR- Enchantment Creature - Cyclops – U – Creatures you control have haste. 5/3. Limited bomb. Once this is in play your opponent will never know how many blockers they need to keep back. It's a good card for Limited in that respect, but that it.

Dictate of the Twin Gods - 3RR - Enchantment - R - Flash. If a source would deal damage to a permanent or player, it deals double that damage to that permanent or player instead. Wait, hang on... I’m reading the flavor text.... Iroas and Mogis are twins?! Okay, for the real thoughts on the card. This might just see some play in the RDW deck I want to build. I have so many dreams of massive damage. Satyr Firedancer gets even better with this and Searing Blood. That combo means 4 to the first creature, six to the player, then another 12 to a second creature. It’s like a volleyball of hellfire.

Eidolon of the great Revel - RR - Enchantment Creature - Spirit - R - Whenever a player cast a spell or converted mana cost 3 or less, Eidolon of the Great Revel deals 2 damage to that player. 2/2. Pryostatic Pillar on a bear. Wow, Modern Burn is starting to look a lot like Legacy Burn. Also with the aggro decks that might be coming when we hit rotation, means this might just find homes in a number of sideboards all over the formats.

Flamespeaker's Will – R – Enchantment – Aura – C – Enchant creature you control. Enchanted creature gets +1/+1. Whenever enchanted creature deals combat damage to a player, you may sacrifice Flamespeaker's Will. IF you do, destroy target artifact. Limited filler. This is just a pump most of the time. Needing to connect to kill an artifact means you are jumping through hoops to make it work.

Flurry of Horns – 4R – Sorcery – C – Put two 2/3 red Minotaur creature tokens with haste onto the battlefield. Draft all the minotaurs is a plan. Makes two dudes with haste sis good enough for Limited, and will end up in the Minotaur tribal Commander deck.

Font of Ire – 1R – Enchantment – C – 3R, Sacrifice Font of Ire: Font of Ire deals 5 damage to target player. So this sets up red devotion until late game were you crack this for the win. Might just be the best of the cycle. Understand that I'm speaking of course about this in Limited. I would much rather be doing something else in Constructed decks.

Forgeborn Oreads – 2RR – Enchantment Creature – Nymph – U – Constellation – Whenever Forgeborn Oreads or another enchantment enters the battlefield under your control, Forgeborn Oreads deals 1 damage to target creature or player. 4/2. Okay, so time to draft mono-enchantments. Turn three drop Grim Guardian into this, then into a pair of the Red Fonts on turn five; that's seven points of damage with another ten points on deck. Just drop either another of this or a Grim and that's the game on the table.

Gluttonous Cyclops – 5R – Creature – Cyclops – C – 5RR: Monstrosity 3. 5/4. It's just a big dumb beater that wont stop eating chump blockers or bashing your opponent's face in Limited.

Harness by Force – 1RR – Sorcery – R – Strive – Harness by Force cost 2R more to cast for each target beyond the first. Gain control of any number of target creatures until end of turn. Untap those creatrues. They gain haste until end of turn. This is just awesome. I have played threaten effects in Limited and even in the sides of my mono-red brews, and this is even better when you get to steal two or more creatures in the late game.

Knowledge and Power – 4R – Enchantment – U – Whenever you scry, you may pay 2. If you do, Knowledge and Power deals 2 damage to target creature or player. It's a Limited and Commander card. It might be a card that will draw you into drafting scry.dec. This and some of the other scry matters cards could get you there in the end. Hmm, sounds like another draft archtype article to work on this week.

Lightning Diadem – 5R – Enchantment – Aura – C – Enchant creature. When Lightning Diadem enters the battlefield, it deals 2 damage to target creature or player. Enchanted creature gets +2/+2. Does just what you want it to do in Limited, deals damage and pumps your dude. Worth a slot if you don't have any better removal or enough bestow dorks.

Magma Spray – R – Instant – C – Magma Spray deals 2 damage to target creature. If that creature would die this turn, exile it instead. It's a cube stable which means it's freaking awesome in Limited. Also a major upgrade over shock for Standard to kill Chandra's Phoenix in the R/W Burn mirror matches.

Mogis’s Warhound - 1R - Enchantment Creature - Hound - U - Bestow 2R. Mogis’s Warhound attack each turn if able. Enchanted creature gets +2/+2 and attacks each turn if able. 2/2. Yup another good bestow dork to beat face with in Limited.

Pensive Minotaur – Just a vanilla dork for sealed deck and filler for the three-drop slot in mono-minotuars for draft.

Prophetic Flamespeaker – 1RR – Creature – Human Shaman – M – Double strike, trample. Whenever Prophetic Flamespeaker deals combat damage to a player, exile the top card of your library. You may play it this turn. 1/3. This is going into Red Deck Wins in Standard when we hit rotation. With scry effects in Limited you should be able to draft around this which means it might be the card that makes you want to draft scry.dec.

Riddle of Lightning – 3RR – Instant – Choos target creature or player. Scry 3, then reveal the top card of your library. Riddle of Lightning deals damage equal to that cards converted mana cost to that creature or player. It's greatfor Limited as burn/removal, but janky outside of Commander in the construceted deck.

Rollick of Abandon – 3RR – Sorcery – U – All creatures get +2/-2 until end of turn. Now this is how red decks do combat tricks. The good thingis that this is kind of removal as well as a pump. I just like this as an all in pre-combat spell were you just swing for the fence and pray with an alpha strike.

Rouse the Mob – R – Instant – C – Strive – Rouse the Mob costs 2R more to cast for each target beyond the first. Any number of target creatures each get +2/+0 and gain trample until end of turn. Strive just makes these combat tricks so much better. I'm really looking forward to drafting just to play with the strive cards.

Satyr Hoplite - R - Creature - Satyr Soldier - C - Heroic - Whenever you cast a spell that targets Satyr Hoplite, put a +1/+1 counter on Satyr Hoplite. 1/1. Okay I think we are getting the critical mass for a RDW aggro deck. This on turn one followed up with a turn two Ordeal means you can bash with a 3/3 on turn two, and if you add Madcap Skills you get a 7/4 that needs two blockers on turn three with the ordeals bonus. That’s GG on turn four with removal.

Sigiled Skink – 1R – Creature – Liazrd – C – Whenever Sigiled Skink attacks, scry 1. 2/1. I like this in Limited were you can Voltron this up with Bestow or gear it up with enchantments. Even if it is just being thrown under the bus to scry it's still a good Limited card.

Spawn of Thraxes - 5RR - Creature - Dragon - R - Flying. When Spawn of Thraxes enters the battlefield, it deals damage to target creature or player equal to the number of Mountains you control. 5/5. I really think we are eitehr getting prepped for a dry spell of mana fixing, or getting pushed into drafting mono-colors. I mean if I see this in pack-one I’m going to be very tempted to force mono-red in draft. Just being able to nuke a creature for 7, or sending that to your opponent’s face to finish out the game makes this a total bomb when drafting mono-red.

Spite of Mogis – R – Sorcery – U – Spite of Mogis deals damage to target creature equal to the number of instant and sorcery cards in your graveyard. Scry 1. I think it's just a piece of flavorful junk. Still in Limited it's an early scry effect.

Starfall – 4R – Instant – C – Starfall deals 3 damage to target creature. If that creature is an enchantment, Starfall deals 3 damage to that creature's controller. Great removal in Limited. Even if this doesn't kill the creature it should help post blocks and it can even double as late burn.

Twinflame – 1R – Sorcery – R – Strive – Twinflame cost 2R more to cast for each target beyond the first. Choose any number of target creatures you control. For each of them, put a token that's a copy of that creature onto the battlefield. Those tokens have haste. Exile them at the beginning of the next end step. This is going to be nuts in Limited as your one fatty becomes three or more. Totally a bomb card.

Wildfire Cerberus – 4R – Creature – Hound – U – 5RR: Monstrosity 1. When Wildfire Cerberus becomes monstrous, it deals 2 damage to each opponent and each creature your opponents control. 4/3. I like this for Limited as you monstrous it and then attack to kill off what ever survived. Totally a great Limited card.

Red is okay in this set. We got some cool cards for Limited and a few Constructed playable cards. Nothing is broken or over-powered about the red cards in this set so it just makes it a nice middle of the road color. Yup, going to enjoy the new RDW tools. Alright, only two more articles and I'm done set reviews until M15 this summer.
