Journey to Nyx – Green Cards

Yes, Theros block is now complete. Now we have to start getting into the swing for Block constructed and we need to start thinking about the future when Return to Ravnica block rotates in October. To do this we need to grind through the reviewing of the cards that are going to force our draft picks, change up our current decks, and maybe even start some brewing gears moving around.

Bassara Tower Archer – GG – Creature – Human Archer – U – Hexproof, reach. 2/1. I can see this breaking into Standard. In Bant Auras this could get pumps to be large enough to hold Desecration Demons at bay. In Limited it's going to be a super annoying unless you can force a chump block.

Colossal Heroics – 2G – Instant – U – Strive – Colossal Heroics costs 1G more to cast for each target beyond the first. Any number of target creatures each get +2/+2 until end of turn. Untap those creatures. Should have been a +3/+3 bonus instead of a +2/+2, after all aren't they giant sized? Still awesome combat trick for Limited.

Consign to Dust – 2G – Instant – U – Strive – Consign to Dust cost 2G more to cast for each target beyond the first. Destroy any number of target artifacts and/or enchantments. Just some artifact/enchantment removal that got strive slapped on it. Still awesome for Limited, but Standard needs exile effects so they can deal with the Gods.

Desecration Plague – 3G – Sorcery – C – Destroy target enchantment or land. Another source of enchantment removal for Limited. With the Nyx creatures it has windows to be enchantment removal as well.

Dictate of Karametra – 3GG – Enchantment – R – Flash. Whenever a player taps a land of mana, that player adds one mana to his or her mana pool of any type that land produced. Yeah, I see a pair of these going into the G/R Monsters list. That is once Underworld Connections and Sphinx's Revelation rotate. Still getting to untap on turn six and drop an 11/11 Mistcutter Hydra will be epic.

Eidolon of Blossoms – 2GG – Enchantment Creature – Spirit – R – Constellation – Whenever Eidolon of Blossoms or another enchantment enters the battlefield under your control, draw a card. 2/2. This basically makes itself and all other enchantments into card draw which is cool, but I don’t think it will break any formats. I see this as just a good card for Limited. We just don’t have enough green enchantment mass in any other format to make this work. The only decks that would run this are the same ones that already use Garruk as it’s draw engine.

Font of Fertility – G – Enchantment – C – 1G, Sacrifice Font of Fertility: Search your library for a basic land card, put it onto the battlefield tapped, then shuffle your library. Just some slow mana fixing for Limited.

Golden Hind – 1G – Creature – Elf – Tap: Add G to your mana pool. 2/1. More slow mana for Limited. If you know your Greek mythology you understand why this is a wasted card name.

Goldenhide Ox – 5G – Enchantment Creature – Ox – U – Constellation – Whenever Goldenhide Ox or another enchantment enters the battlefield under you control, target creature must be blocked this turn if able. 5/4. Not a bad effect in Limited as you can force bad blockers to each utility creatures.

Hero's Bane – 3GG – Creature – Hydra – R – Hero's Bane enters the battlefield with four +1/+1 counters on it. 2GG: Put X +1/+1 counters on Heroes' Bane, where X is its power. 0/0. It seems that green has to have a hydra that gets huge fast just like red has to have a flavorful dragon. Still this is a bomb in Limited. Just keeps getting bigger and bigger and forcing blockers and removal till you grind the game out with it.

Humbler of Mortals – 4GG – Enchantment Creature – Elemental – C – Constellation – Whenever Humbler of Mortals or another enchantment enters the battlefield under you control, creatures you control gain trample until end of turn. 5/5. Limited bomb. Green loves to drop fatties and not all fatties have trample, but this gives them the needed ability.

Hydra Broodmaster – 4GG – Creature – Hyrda – R – XXG: Monstrosity X. When Hydra Broodmaster becomes monstrous, put X X/X green Hydra creature tokens onto the battlefield. 7/7. Hail, Hydra! I want to see a player cast Dictate of Karametra on their oppnent's end step, and then cast this plus monstrous it for 4 4/4s because you have all the ramp. Still it's going to be a Limited bomb.

Kruphix's Insight – 2G – Sorcery – C – Reveal the top six cards of your library. Put up to three enchantment cards from among them into your hand and the rest of the revealed cards into your graveyard. Yup, another card for the Dredge deck in Draft. Don't worry I'll muse about the deck in a later article.

Market Festival – 3G – Enchantment – Aura – C – Enchant land. Whenever enchanted land is tapped for mana, it's controller adds two mana in any combination of colors to his or her mana pool. Now that is a ramp spell for Limited Monsters. This makes any land tap for three so you can activate those Monstrosity abilities sooner.

Nature's Panoply – G – Instant – C – Strive – nature's Panoply cost 2g more to cast for each target beyond the first. Choose any number of target creatures. Put a +1/+1 counter on each of them. Another pump spell for Limited.

Nessian Game Warden – 3GG – Creature – Beast – U – When Nessian Game Warden enters the battlefield, look at the top X cards of your library, where X is the number of Forest you control. You may reveal a creature card from among them and put it into your hand. Put the rest on the bottom of your library in any order. 4/5. This is just here to force mono-green in Limited. Which doesn't look that bad if you just want to ramp into fatties all day long.

Oakheart Dryads – 2G – Enchantment Creature – Nymph Dryad – C – Constellation – Whenever Oakheart Dryads or another enchantment enters the battlefield under your control, target creature gets +1/+1 until end of turn. 2/3. Kind of lame but it's a free trick for Limited.

Pheres-Band Thunderhoof – 4G – Creature – Centaur Warrior – C – Heroic – Whenever you cast a spell that targets Pheres-Band Thunderhoof, put two +1/+1 counters on Pheres-Band Thunderhoof. ¾. An awesome heroic card for Limited. An ordeal on this will trigger the same turn and net you fast returns as you don;t need to worry about you opponent untapping into removal.

Pheres-Band Warchieft – 3G – Creature – Centaur Warrior – R – Vigilance, tample. Other Centaur creatures you control get +1/+1 and have vigilance and trample. 3/3. So centaurs get a good lord for Limited. This might just make the cut into a Commander deck, but it's just a good pick for Limited.

Ravenous Leucrocota – 3G – Creature – Beast – C – Vigilance. 6G: Monstrosity 3. 2/4. Speaking of big dumb beaters for green in Limited. Not as powerful and fast as the hydra this still needs to be answered before it turns into a 5/7.

Renowned Weaver – G – Creature – Human Shaman – C – 1G, Sacrifice Reowned Weaver: Put a 1/3 green Spider enchantment creature token with reach onto the battlefield. 1/1. Yup, it's a card for that Dredge Draft deck. I also like thati in Limited you can chump block and answer removal by replacing it with the token. All over good one-drop in Limited.

Reviving Melody – 2G – Sorcery – U – Choose one or both – Return target creature card from your graveyard to your hand; and/or return target enchantment card from you graveyard to your hand. And those Dredge cards are going deep once more. Outside of that deck, this is a good sideboard card to have verses an opponent with lots of removal.

Satyr Grovedancer – 1G – Creature – Satyr Shaman – C – When Satyr Grovedancer enters the battlefield, put a +1/+1 counter on target creature. 1/1. So either I get a 2/2 for 1G or that 2/1 I dropped last turn is now a 3/2 and is attacking you. That's a great card for Limited right there.

Setessan Tactics – 1G – Instant – R – Strive – Setessan Tactics costs G more to cast for each target beyond the first. Until end of turn, any number of target creatures each get +1/+1 and gain “Tap: This creature fights another target creature.” Have to say this is the trump of combat tricks in Limited. It’s got a really cheap Strive cost, and with Archtype of Finality or Bow of Nylea in play this can blow out Limited games. If the Bow becomes popular in constructed than this might just become a sideboard friend.

Solidarity of Heroes – 1G – Instant – U – Strive – Solidarity of Heroes costs 1G more to cast for each target beyond the first. Choose any number of target creatures. Double the number of +1/+1 counters on each of them. That's awesome. Now I see why the default heroic ability was putting +1/+1 counters on them. Also this allows an unblocked hydra to be GG. In this Limited format this is a home run to flavor and win town.

Spirespine – 2G – Enchantment Creature – Beast – U – Bestow 4G. Spirespine blocks each turn if able. Enchantment creature gets +4/+1 and blocks each turn if able. 4/1. That has to be the worst draw back i have ever seen on a three mana 4/x in the history of Magic. Sure it should be able to eat just about any early game creature, but later you better be bestowing this on an attacker. Hmm, maybe that’s the reason for this, to teach new players to hold back some creatures for later. So we get a teaching card that is some what good for Limited.

Strength from the Fallen – 1G – Enchantment – U – Constellation – Whenever Strength from the Fallen or another enchantment enters the battlefield under you control, target creature gets +X/+X until end of turn, where X is the number of creature cards in your graveyard. Dang! That is an epic card to add to the Dredge Draft deck. This plus Whip of Erebos might just make the deck take off in Block. I'm loving it.

Swarmborn Giant – 2GG – Creature – Giant – U – When you're dealt combat damage, sacrifce Swarmborn Giant. 4GG: Monstrosity 2. AS long as Swarmborn Giant is monstrous, it has reach. 6/6. Dredge Draft needs fatties and the fact that this can help by dying means it's a card for the deck. Also being a 6/6 for four mana means any green deck will run this in Limited.

Overall I have to say that Green is really making me want to work on my drafting skills so I can work on forcing a Dredge style deck. Outside of Limited the color doesn't have much in way of new toys for decks. Best I think we got some constructed ramp in Dictate of Karametra. Still the color is looking good for Limited and brewers. Well, only one more article to cover and I'm all don with my reviews.
