Journey to Nyx – Black Cards

Yes, Theros block is now complete. Now we have to start getting into the swing for Block constructed and we need to start thinking about the future when Return to Ravnica block rotates in October. To do this we need to grind through the reviewing of the cards that are going to force our draft picks, change up our current decks, and maybe even start some brewing gears moving around.

Agent of Erebos – 3B – Enchantment Creature – Zombie – U – Constellation – Whenever Agent of Erebos or another enchantment enters the battlefield under your control, exile all cards from target player's graveyard. 2/2. Solid card for graveyard hate in block. With G/B Dredge gaining lots of respect this might just get some Standard play.

Aspect of gorgon – 2B – Enchantment – Aura – C – Enchant Creature. Enchanted creature gets +1/+3 and has deathtouch. Awesome enchantment for Limited, but that's about it.

Bloodcrazed Hoplite – 1B – Creature – Human Soldier – C – Heroic – Whenever you cast a spell that targets Bloodcrazed Hoplite, put a +1/+1 counter on it. Whenever a +1/+1 counter is placed on Bloodcrazed Hoplite, remove a +1/+1 counter from target creature an opponent controls.2/1. I like this in Limited. A lot of the heroes all have the simple “put a +1/+1 counter on it” line, and this lets you shrink them down.

Brain Maggot – 1B – Enchantment Creature – Insect – U – When Brain Maggot enters the battlefield, target opponent reveals his or her hand and you choose a nonland card from it. Exile that card until Brain Maggot leaves the battlefield. 1/1. Since rotation I've been missing a two drop discard spell for my discard Standard deck. Still that deck evolved into mono-black; so we aren't going to see a comeback. Still, it's a ninth to tenth discard spell for sideboards. Okay, so the jury is out on this in Standard. I have hope. Limited it's an annoying card to look at and disrupt hands. Sure, it's going it die but a removal lite format, were you took their only removal, this will slow down games.

Cast into Darkness – 1B – Enchantment – Aura – C – Enchant creature. Enchanted creature gets -2/-0 and can't block. Lols, nice 0/X that can't block dude. Most annoying removal spell in Limited.

Cruel Feeding – B – Instant – C – Strive – Cruel Feeding cost 2B more to cast for each target beyond the first. Any number of target creatures each get +1/+0 and gain lifelink until end of turn. Just another combat trick that gets way better in the late game.

Dictate of Erebos – 3BB – Enchantment – R – Flash. Whenever a creature you control dies, each opponent sacrifices a creature. I don't think this is going to be more than a Limited and Commander card. Maybe it combos with the W/B god, Cartel Aristocrat, and some EtB dorks. That deck just need to prove it can keep pace with the other Standard deck to win me over.

Doomwake Giant - 4B - Enchantment Creature - Giant - R - Constellation - When Doomwake Giant or another enchantment enters the battlefield under your control, creature your opponents control get -1/-1 until end of turn. 4/6. Okay time to go back to the drawing board to rethink mono-black aggro into mon-black Nyx for Block. Totally wanting to play this deck. Also a bomb for Limited.

Dreadbringer Lampads – 4B – Enchantment Creature – Nymph – C – Constellation – Whenever Dreadbringer Lampads or another enchantment enters the battlefield under your control, target creature gains intimidate until end of turn. 4/2. Yes, for Limited this turns enchantments into combat tricks. Still Mogis's Marauder is so much better, but I'll play this too.

Extinguish All Hope - 4BB - Sorcery - R - Destroy all nonenchantment creatures. Dang it, I was so hoping this would have been more aggressively costed. Still there have been a number of times I’ve wished I had a sweeper in my mono-black Standard brews. I can see this finding some sideboard love. In limited with everyone playing the Bestow Voltron game this is so janky that it should have been priced at 2BB.

Feast of Dreams – 1B – Instant – C – Destroy target enchanted creature or enchantment creature. Is that satyr holding a lightsaber? No, really, go look at the art. He is so holding a lightsaber handle. Still with all the critical mass of enchantment and enchanted creatures in Limited this will be a great removal spell.

Fellhide Petrifier – 2B – Creature – Minotaur Warrior – U – Deathtouch. Other Minotaur creatures you control have deathtouch. 2/3. Draft all the cow-men! I wish that the tribe was just a little bit better for Standard, but it's a good budget brew.

Font of Return – 1B – Enchantment – C – 3B, Sacrifice Font of Return: Return up to three target creature cards from you graveyard to your hand. I can see this being the back bone of a draft Dredge deck. That deck would be so fun to force. Note to self, work on this idea for a future article.

Gnarled Scarhide - B - Enchantment Creature - Minotaur - U - Bestwo 3B. Granled Scarhide can’t block. Enchanted creature gets +2/+1 and can’t block. 2/1. Mono-black aggro seems to be building up new tools. I’m liking this with all the other enchantment creatures it has in it so you can run our new board wipe in the side. Also this gives us more bestow for Tormented Hero which makes this a go to over Rakdos Cackler. Also this is another good beater for Limited.

Grim Guardian – 2B – Enchantment Creature – Zombie – C – Constellation – Whenever Grim Guardian or another enchantment enters the battlefield under your control, each opponent loses 1 life. ¼. I love the art on this and hope it gets put on a playmat. As for it's use as a card, I think it's going to be awesome in Limited. Every enchantment gets incremental value that will lead to a win.

King Macar, the Gold-Cursed – 2BB – Legendary Creature – Human – R – Inspired – Whenever King Macar, the Gold-Cursed becomes untapped, you may exile target creature. If you do, put a colorless artifact token named Gold onto the battlefield. It ahs “Sacrifice this artifact: Add one mana of any color to your mana pool.” 2/3. I'm going to so build a Commander deck around this guy. If you get this and A Spring Leaf Drum you should be able to ride this to a win if you can dodge removal in Limited.

Master of the Feast – 1BB – Enchantment Creature – Demon – R – Flying. At the beginning of your upkeep, each opponent draws a card. 5/5. I need five of these. Four for my mono-black aggro deck and a fifth for my group hug commander deck... maybe a sixth for my cube. I just have a need to play a suicide black deck. Plus, I can always use hand disruption to counter the drawing. Wait, with the trigger on the stack, I flash in Notion thief... I'd have to slow roll this for a turn so I'll have the mana, but this could work as a two card combo in U/B devotion. This card is going to be good but it's going to take a month or two until players start respecting it.

Nightmarish End – 2B – Instant – U – Target creature gets -X/-X until end of turn, where X is the number of cards in your hand. Well, Esper gets some good god level removal in Standard. Without mass card drawing this is just not worth a draft pick in Limited.

Nyx Infusion – Interesting card of Limited. It can be removal or just weaken a blocker, but you can also fuel your own Nyx dorks with a pump.

Pharika's Chosen – B – Creature – Snake – C – Deathtouch. 1/1. Sometimes you just need a turn one death touch dork in Limited. With bestow this speed bump can go from forcing attackers to stay home to growing into a beater that forces chump blocking.

Returned Reveler – 1B – Creature – Zombie Satyr – C – When Returned Reveler dies, each player puts the top three cards of his or her library into his or her graveyard. 1/3. This is not a mill card! This is a card that goes into the Dredge draft brew. This just blocks and fills the yard. Do not try to draft this for a mill deck.

Ritual of the Returned – 3B – Instant – U – Exile target creature card from your graveyard. Put a black Zombie creature token onto the battlefield. Its power is equal to that card's power and its toughness is equal to that card's toughness. Looks like the cards for that dredge dekc are going deep. Sure, this isn't a reanimation spell but it's damn close. Remember the gods are creatures in the graveyard.

Rotted Hulk – 3B – Creature – Elemental – C – 2/5. Just a big beater for Limited that can take hits but needs pumps to work.

Silence the Believers – 2BB – Instant – R – Strive – Silence the Believers costs 2B more to cast for each target beyond the first. Exile any number of target creatures and all Auras attached to them. Total Limited bomb removal. Kills gods and voltrons all day long. I'm thinking this might find some love in Standard sideboards as some hate verses decks that have Whips of Erebos.

Spiteful Blow – 4BB – Sorcery – U – Destroy target creature and target land. It's good in Limted as you get to nuke a creature and short you opponent on the splash color. It's like saying, “Screw you and your couch.”

Squelching Leeches - 2BB - Creature - Leech - U - Squelching Leeches’s power and toughness are each equal to the number of swamps you control. */*. I have to say this is a nice way of making us force ourselves into mono-colored drafting, but I’ll draft how I want to draft thank you.

Thoughtrender Lamia – 4BB – Enchantment Creature – Lamia – U – Constellation – Whenever Thoughtrender Lamia or another enchantment enters the battlefield under your control, each opponent discards a card. 5/3. Annoying, completely annoying. Sure you need the card pool to make this work, and it's a lake game card, but hand disruption is good in Sealed, which is when you are going to be playing this.

Tormented Thoughts – 2B – Sorcery – U – As an additional cost to cast Tormented Thoughts, sacrifice a creature. Target player discards a numbers of cards equal to the sacrificed creatures power. Another flavorful discard spell that I wouldn't want to play ever. Still if I do build a back draft cube, I'll be sure to buy one of these.

\Worst Fears – My worst fear is that someone will try to build a janky combo deck around this, and I'll have to hear about it every three days at the cafe. Without the lock that Mindslayber gives you by being reused this is ust a Limited and Commander card. Remember to ask to see their sideboard when you cast this.

Black is just perfect for Limited in this set. I really want to start working on drafting the graveyard deck. Outside of Limited I'm happy to see that mono-black is going to stay a deck post-rotation as we switch over to mono-black aggro instead of devotion. Also I plan to build a King Goldfinger Commander deck at some point soon. All around, I'm a fan of how black finished the block. Well, time to look at what we get in red.
