October 29,2013-It's new music Tuesday today and Sunday Best season 5 winner Joshua Rogers is back with a great album! You’ve heard him sing covers of some of gospel music’s best, but on this project you will hear from the young man himself. Rogers either wrote or co-wrote every song on the album. In fact he even sang the background vocals on the project, due out today!
When asked about the makeup of the album, Rogers said that on this offering he wanted to express himself to the listeners, leaving room on the next project for guest artists and writers.
The album presents a more grown up sound and is the quintessential coming of age album for “Young Buck”. At 19 years old, Rogers has plenty to sing and write about. He shares a little more of his old soul and connection to the past with features like “As the Deer” and “Draw Me Nearer”, both stirring interludes suegue into original songs.
Rogers said “there’s something for everybody” and that listeners will “find at least one song that they like”. More than likely you’ll find three to four if not the entire album. The album is well written and produced and takes listeners on a journey with Rogers as he bares his soul via his colorful compositions.
“So Good”, the first single from the album is a dance track that is fresh and will have you dancing because the Lord has indeed been just that good!
“Unconditional” awakens the reality that the love of the Lord is unconditional. This ballad captures the essence of Rogers’ heart of gratitude!
“I Got Joy” features a brass band to go along with Rogers’ impeccable vocals! Find some friends and make some noise to this track! This is the first song on the album you’ll want to turn up and let the whole neighborhood hear!
“Your Grace” gets a little churchy! In this hand clapping and foot stomping tune, Rogers sings: I would have lost my chance to be all I am…”and singing as Sunday Best winner, he’s certainly grateful for the grace of God in his life! Amazingly, Rogers has written these songs far beyond the scope of a typical 19 year old!
“More than Enough”…Motown much?!? The Funk Brothers go gospel on this track. It’s a feel good, classic soul sound put to one of the strongest messages for believers. “More than Enough” delivers in more ways than one! Fresh off the heels of a government shutdown, believers can truly say that the Lord is and has been more than enough! Tambourine, horn section and hand claps bolster the refrain “…can’t tell it all…!”
“I’ll Trust You” is perfect for a church setting. Going along with the writing theme of this album, Rogers sings about his growing trust in the Lord ‘no matter how it looks’. Production of this song is reminiscent of the Ted and Sheri recordings. Great song and awesome testimony!
“As the Deer”…Rogers makes this gospel classic his own, set to the blazing organ accompaniment of Antuan Walker.
“You Alone” has a praise and worship feel. Lots of guitars and fantastic background vocals! One listen and you’ll be singing with Rogers on this one: “holy holy holy, you alone…!”
“Draw Me Nearer”…the tandem of Rogers and Antuan Walker return with their take on another classic segueing into a praise break like no other! It’s not on the album, but it may be in your house or wherever you are listening to this rendition! Rogers explores the full extension of his range, which has seemingly grown since his time on Sunday Best.
“The Blood”…Rogers says: “I’ve been waiting on this one…” and so have you! Looking for that churchy ballad from Rogers? Well, here it is…the refrain “by nothing but the blood” is enough to make you shout alone but Rogers takes this one even higher with his lead! You will either press pause or hit repeat…this is the good part of the album! The REAL part of the album where the writing theme comes full circle and you just need to take a moment to say “thank you Lord!”
“Never Alone” is another offering with an alternative feel. Rogers has found a way to write to a variety of audiences on this project and this song along with “You Alone” certainly have crossover commercial appeal to Adult Contemporary and Contemporary Christian Music listeners everywhere.
“He Is” completes the album and doesn’t miss or skip a beat! It’s a great close to a great album. Another memorable hook with great background vocals.
“Unconditional” by Joshua Rogers is phenomenal! The album is replete with great music, singing and a great message. The theme throughout the album celebrates the goodness of God, for us to us and in spite of us! Rogers is headed your way via his "Unconditional" tour right now. Along with him, you'll see Sunday Best alums and past winners. On opening night in Jackson, Mississippi Amber Bullock graced the stage. On his Dallas stop, Andrea Helms and Odell Bunton, Jr. were on hand to lift Jesus with Joshua. Be on the lookout for tour dates and opening acts as the tour comes to your area!
The album is available on the Music World Label, executively produced by Matthew Knowles and and distributed by Fontana Distribution. Congratulations to Joshua Rogers, Chris Williams, The Change Agency, Dwight Gavin, Matthew Knowles and the entire Music World staff for a great album!
