Jon Middleton: 'EP' (2012)

"EP" by Jon Middleton is a very ambient and chilled out Acoustic Folk album.

Songs within this album tend to be structured around very slow builds, with all instrumentals staying restrained and bare bones throughout. Most tracks instrumentally are centered around a single acoustic guitar line that picks back and forth between two or three chords, repeating, and allowing more focus to be centered on vocals and lyric. All other instruments used seem to be for textural affect, such as very light electric guitar, and accordion in the background.

Vocally Middleton's voice is very scratchy and somewhat rough, this trait paired with his soft singing style makes for an enjoyable sound. Lyrics tend to sound almost like old poetry, working with very simple ideas and heavy use of allegory and illustration.

Altogether the album is a very relaxing listen.
