Blues legend Johnny Winter played the 2nd show of 2 nights at City Winery Chicago Thursday night. This was my first time at City Winery. There is always good music there and the venue part is very nice. Dave Herrero opened the show both nights and is always fun to see live. Johnny Winter’s band: Paul Nelson (Guitar), Scott Spray (Bass), and Tommy Curiale (drums) took the stage and played an instrumental intro as Jonny Winter walked on stage. Winter was handed his guitar then started playing. Johnny Winter sat on a stool and went into Chuck Berry’s Johnny B. Goode. Winter turned 69 just two weeks ago and shows no signs of slowing down. Johnny and his band were rocking all night through covers of Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, and The Rolling Stones. On Ray Charles’ Blackjack Chicago’s own Billy Branch came on stage to play harmonica. For the encore we had the honor of watching Winter play slide guitar on his Gibson Firebird for blues classic “Dust My Broom” and Bob Dylan’s “Highway 61 Revisted.” It was an unforgettable experience. After 50+ years as an artist Winter has the same passion for playing. The last time Johnny Winter was in Chicago was for the Rock N’ Blues Fest this past summer with his brother Edgar, Rick Derringer, and Kim Simmonds. If you missed Johnny Winter, make sure you see him next time he comes around.
