'Jodorowsky's Dune' is straight candy for movie fanatics

Jodorowsky's Dune

There are always stories about productions and different films that never quite get off the ground, but none have been more influential and important than this one. "Jodorowsky's Dune" is a glimpse inside a movie that was never made...but ultimately influenced some of the more influential and popular movies to ever hit the screen.

Finally telling his story after all these years

In 1975, director Alejandro Jodorowsky, a filmmaker whose style could only ever be described as unique began work on what was his most ambitious project to date. Casting his own 12 year old son to star alongside the likes of Orson Welles, Mick Jagger, David Carradine and Salvador Dali, featuring a musical score from Pink Floyd along with art and production design from some of the most cutting edge talents to ever step on the scene including people like H.R. Giger and Jean 'Moebius' Giraud he set off to make his adaptation of the classic science fiction novel, Dune. It was supposed to change cinema, and in a way it did as we see through interviews with people and involved, other cinematic luminaries and Alejandro Jodorowsky we learn the full saga behind what is possibly the greatest movie that was never made.

To put it pretty darn simply, "Jodorowsky's Dune" is a slice of movie nerd heaven told to us by an exuberant madman/artist who chronicles this tale of spirituality, ambition and big dreams that never quite got fulfilled. It's the cinematic equivalent of sitting around a campfire and being told one doozy of a story.

With his first feature effort in 14 years, director Frank Pavich takes a collection of talking heads and makes it a hell of a lot of fun as the film recounts with vim and vigor what could have been so many years ago. Serving as primary subject and storyteller, Jodorowsky is a vibrant and compelling subject as he recounts this story, even at the age of 85 with the energy and enthusiasm of a 12 year old trying to get some attention. He is excited to tell this story, that he just can't help himself and it really does come across on the screen. Pavich just winds him and lets him go, and when we see the art work and see who was almost involved this really would have changed the course of movie history as iconic classics in the sci-fi genre like "Star Wars" & "Alien" may have never happened as this version of "Dune" would have blown so many of those films out of the water before they ever got started.

Picture and sound quality on the Blu-Ray are top notch and the special features include some deleted scenes.

" Jodorowsky's Dune" not only reminds us what could have been, but makes us appreciate the fact the only real failure in any creative endeavour is to never try.

4 out of 5 stars.
